He uses this response to illustrate what he calls methodological embedding, a model-reformulation strategy for overcoming the challenges posed by differing tractability standards. #ERCStG #FrontierResearch

One response to this problem by proponents of agent-based modeling has been the construction of "hybrid" models that combine elements of agent-based models with macroeconomic general equilibrium models.

MODEL TRANSFER ERC Project @modeltransfer.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
Specifically, he explains the difficulties surrounding the adoption of agent-based models in macroeconomics as a problem of establishing and negotiating tractability.

MODEL TRANSFER ERC Project @modeltransfer.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
The existence of varying tractability standards across scientific domains has important implications for #ModelTransfer: a model considered tractable in one context may no longer be regarded as tractable when transferred to another.

MODEL TRANSFER ERC Project @modeltransfer.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
In the paper, he challenges the default view of tractability in the philosophy of science, drawing on Béatrice Cherrier's @undercoverhist.bsky.social ideas regarding tractability standards.

He proposes a framework based on theoretical templates as intermediate representational structures that generate families of models. On this view, vertical progress consists in systematic development within model families, while horizontal progress consists in the introduction of new templates.

In the paper, he asks: How does scientific progress work in model-based sciences such as economics? He argues that the common distinction between horizontal and vertical progress in terms of model addition versus model replacement is misleading and does not clarify how the two are related.
