This form of advertising is becoming indefensible. There is no overall economic benefit as far as I can see. Products were absolutly able to be advertised prior to granular tracking. And the risks and costs to everybody are high.

Interesting, I don't think I was that clear on the difference between seams and friction and have tried to work it out reading this. Would the need for seems differ from the need for friction, eg seams give sense of control through triggering action, friction by stopping (thoughtless) action?

For what it's worth....neither did I. Whilst - for me - single word quotes can be dismissive, they aren't automatically. In my normal reading they're simply used when people want to reference a specific word choice of speakers in indirect speech.

A vicious cycle of four steps surrounding a black cat with a thousand-yard stare and a dapper little tie. The four endlessly cycling steps read:

-going forward we're gonna need more of your data to make sure it's you

-ahaha youre not gonna believe this but we had a bit of a data breach

-your data is probably for sale online now

-that means someone could easily impersonate you

Having been in a corporate setting at the time, I blame the widespread, popular uptake of the innovator dilemma for emperors-new-clothes level hyper exitment about so obviously terrible, pointless products. Nobody will be held accountable for uncritically jumping on board though.

Yes, plenty of cases in history where people somewhat close to a detestable ideology *also* showed real integrity at certain morality faultlines. We don't have to like the former to show respect for the latter. (That said, I'm waiting to see how this plays out and if they may yet cave)

For all the 'it's fascism/ it's capitalism'....its quite possibly also the result of enlightment-indidvidualism-liberalism. Norms and morality are now mostly individually chosed (and thank goodness for that - think Sex, Religion ect). Flipside may be this : care of the self supreme

Really hard to look at this and all the other examples of bravery and kindness from ordinary people in this moment not think also of the tremendous cowardice exhibited over the past year by some of the richest, most well-protected people in business, media and politics

Looking for recs: With the discussion around social media bans for young ones... Are there projects, people, articles looking at what a child safe design would look like (eg not just blocking types of content, but interactions, addictivness, social dynamics) Similar to how we rate movies? #designsky

Maybe in 2026 we can start to agree that "a complex algorithm selects content" is an editorial stance and platforms should be responsible to a certain degree.

Same, duck duck go and startpage since it switched to bing are borderline unusable. And whilst i detest the ai summaries of google it still does a much better job of filtering out the ai slop pages from its search results (and generally irrelavent results)

Oh but that would require listening, analysing, synthesising, problem solving, designing solutions, a different kind of investing and change.....nobody has the time -or budget- for that. (I'm only being half-sarcastic) Hence consultancies, agencies, outsourcing...and now AI.

Digital advertising thrives on seeming super visible to the company and measurable (yey numbers!) but building meaningful metrics is actually hard. So will they get anoyed? Unlikely as they barely will be able to tell (on a wider org level, the SMEs might)

It's a mix. There is some awarness building. The MFA sites, non genuine traffic, platforms putting you on irrrlevant searches / key words. But as long as mainly its still clicks being measured it stays obscur. And the understanding of this in companies varies hugely.

Any cultural flaw- such as citation=authority - is the crack in which the dynamite of AI can be shoved and now blow up the whole construct.

To me, thats 80% of the critical work in large comanpies. Its also why I tend to be amused by (often derogatory) talk of automating product/ project or any of the other roles whos main challenge is exactly that.

Ah...when i saw this whilst yes, no longer entierly unplausible anymore, the whole thing smellt chain-mail-y to me. I do think the lack of reporting by big news oulets (unlike meta changes for example) contributed to my scepticism. So maybe not all is broken?

And of course the overall cheapening of words thanks to these wild word generators. Is everything but IRL human to human conversation now doomed. Not all bad, but I'd be sad to see the world get smaller again after.

This thread does seem to have descended into " can you believe - all these silly people" More interesting to me would be is AI psychosis just increasing the visibility? Or is there evidence that it is increasing prevelance of psychosis - making more of us potentially unwell.

Sadly i think unless there are studies that can quantify the impact there's no chance (and even then slim as often l/t) Public sector the democratic argument (citizens should be able to navigate their state) may be stronger but Im not overly hopefull

Couldn't agree more, what's missing in most places is frequent checks if the "whole" of it still makes sense, fits together, is coherent. All *good* designers and product ppl see this. The challenge in my experiene is how to sell that upwards. Money only for sparkles not housekeeping.

Wait , so if their argument was accepted, all their users would be commiting copyright infringment? Including all their corporate clients? Im genuinly confused how throwing your customers under the bus would be good for business. I must be misunderstanding something.

Lucrative to the companies selling this, definitly harmful to the users, and questionable if really that beneficial to compaies advertising

Its baffles how little comment there is - all other considerations aside - that everything points to fundamentally terrible design....if you must take courses how to use a product, the bizarre prompt-engineering culture, the ' research' on how an existing product will work...its probably not great.

I do have a bit of beef with the critical tech movement in that it largely operates as an academic research movement for advancement of phds to talk about surveillance and labor instead of as a practitioner-led movement to create alternative work pathways for tech workers to do things that dont suck
