Let’s be clear here, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.

At our municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.
Mayor Mamdani holds up bananas with a 30% off sticker on them. Shelves of produce and canned goods, all with 30% off stickers on them. New Yorkers clap at the press conference announcing the 30% discount for municipal grocery stores.

A book sitting on a bed. The cover image shows a group of young adults in costume. L-R: a young man in a blue mask, wearing a blue tank top and pants and a belt with loops holding cans of spray paint; a young woman in an outfit that screams “Disney princess”, emphasized by the two birds above her head (one of which is tugging at her hair); a young woman wearing a long-sleeved maroon leotard with a deep V-neck and a V-motif repeated at the belt line, brown gloves, and brown rabbit ears; a young woman with a rainbow streak dyed into her hair, wearing a black full-body suit with a rainbow sash tied at the waist; and a young woman with steampunk goggles, leather harness and waist corset, holding an improbably large handgun. They are standing in front of a poster showing four teenagers in superhero costumes, including younger versions of the girl with rabbit ears and the rainbow girl. Top text reads “Velveteen vs. the consequences of her actions”, bottom text is the author’s name, Seanan McGuire.

I found 6 women who said they were “moderates” & did not align with any political party. I asked them if they would be willing to take a quiz on whether quotes about reproduction came from the 19th century or now. To convince them to spend time talking to me, I told them I was doing it for a class.

The US first amendment protects a lot of stuff I find vile, but it also protects a lot of stuff that I find useful and beneficial but a lot of other people think is vile. Given the well-established fact that anti-speech laws are used against marginalized people most, it's a bargain I'll gladly take.

Why do ACs not list their external dimensions and internal dimensions separately? Why only list totals? (my bedroom window has a maximum of 10" of clearance between the window and a metal gate, so this is critical for me in figuring out whether an AC, sight-unseen, would even work in my space)

Don't know who I heard it from first, but all SF has at least 3 dates: When it was written When it was set When it's actually about Sometimes some of these dates are the same date, but there's often some divergence. But, many tech-bros don't have anywhere this nuanced a take on the genre.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

A desperate plea sent to me by a Minneapolis resident who's been on the front lines since the beginning of the ICE occupation:
Just a quick update from the Twin Cities. (Please forgive the unsolicited message). THINGS ARE NOT BETTER IN MINNEAPOLIS. The media is mostly moving on, Trump is focused on other stuff, BUT NOTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE GROUND. More than 2,000 DHS thugs continue to roam the streets, abducting people 24/7, assaulting legal observers with impunity, and routinely denying 1st, 4th, and 5th amendment rights. Drones and helicopters are overhead every day. Hundreds and hundreds of terrified families have not left their homes since mid-December ... relying on the community to bring them food and help with rent and other necessities. (Those people are NOT violent drug cartel sex offending murderers, as DHS would tell you. Most are legal residents or citizens.) If anything, things have just become more stressful and intractable (think trench warfare as a suitable metaphor): The resistance is better organized and numerous, but DHS has become more clever and better at disguise... and the county sheriff's office is increasingly supporting them . Do not let anyone tell you that Homans (the new person in charge of the occupation) is making anything better. Do not let anyone tell you that 700 ICE agents leaving the city has made much of a difference; the remaining force (again, ~2,000) is still larger than the entire city's police force (which is legally unable to do anything). Please call your congressional reps ... especially if there is any chance the administration might listen to them.

Federal judge has ordered the release of Liam Ramos (the bunny hat boy) and his father. A brief and rather remarkable order. Clearly written to be shared widely, so please do. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
Ultimately, Petitioners may, because of the arcane United States immigration system, return to
their home country, involuntarily or by self-deportation. But that result should occur through a more
orderly and humane policy than currently in place.
Philadelphia, September 17, 1787: "Well, Dr. Franklin, what do we have?" "A republic, if you
can keep it."
With a judicial finger in the constitutional dike,
It is so ORDERED.
SIGNED this 31st day of February, 2026.
