I've just watched Attenborough's Oceans film. It's excellent. But my overwhelming feeling is "at last!" I've been waiting, and fruitlessly lobbying, for a film like this for 40 years. But the institutional cowardice of the broadcasters has stymied such projects, until now.

The scale of the disaster is hard to grasp, but this photo of the Cambrian Mountains, viewed from Drygarn Fawr (taken by Velella), gives you a sense of it. It's just one of our terrestrial dead zones, but it covers roughly 300km2.

Today would have been Archibald Hattemore's birthday. He was born on 9th June, 1890. Here's one of the last paintings that he exhibited with the Group in 1931 before his new job as a flooring estimator meant that he was too busy to paint. This is "The Window" by him. #ArchibaldHattemore #botd

This proposal by the BBC is explicitly anti-democratic. As @natashadevon.bsky.social and others have pointed out, more women are moving to the Green party than are men going to Reform - yet the national broadcaster is falling over itself to pander to the extreme right. Why?

By way of an alternative to Cecil Osborne's iconic view of "Sunday Morning, Farringdon Road" here's "Canal at Bow" by Walter Steggles from 1931. It depicts the bridge that carries what was the Great Eastern Railway across the Lea Navigation adjacent to the old Bryant & May factory in Bow.

On #BankHolidayMonday I thought that this little oil painting of "Canvey Island" by Walter Steggles from 1933 might be appropriate. Canvey was a day-trip/holiday destination for so many East Enders "back in the day". It shows what was Cox's Cafe on what was then known as Shell Beach. #WalterSteggles
