The older I get, the more pragmatic I’ve become. As we have had abundant evidence (twice!), if you are out of power you can’t achieve any aim — important, trivial, and everything in between.

How about if Democratic candidates just answer " This is the GOP again trying to stoke culture wars which have nothing to do with the price of gas, groceries, or housing, so I am not going to engage in their BS. I think most people are worried about what happens in their own households."

Yep. Republicans want this election to be about culture war issues. And so many people here are spoiling to give Republicans exactly the kind of election they *prefer* (Remember: The GOP was lighting candles for Hong.)

Look, no offense to Daisy, but "craft a counter-narrative" is what the Republicans *want* They want to have long, explain-yourself, bad-faith debates with Democrats that probably will lead to Mike Rogers asking AES where trans women should stand in a mosque. Don't. Take. That. Bait.

When you go to war because you believe - and only planned for - the Best Case Scenario, this is what happens. A real SECDEF would never have allowed it. But a TV host with no defense background beyond an Army career that never got past Major isn't a real SECDEF

I did this back on Xitter back in COVID days and saved screenshots when I left. It's got worse since.
I keep thinking about what would've happened if I'd pitchec a 2020 novel to an editor in 1998.

There's a global pandemic. Starts in China, spreads fast.

"You can't stop it, right?" editor says.

"Nope. You can't stop slow it. Masks like 1918, etc."

"Flu pandemic reference is nice," the editor says. "Wevdo this while we work on vaccine or cure?"

"Mostly we don't. A party makes it all political. If you do it, you're on the wrong side. So the virus spreads."

"Don't they come to their senses whrn it gets out of hand?"

"Not well. 2020 is an election year. And Internet talk is a big deal then. Everybody has a cell phone like a little computer...""Don't they spread information fast?" the editor says.

"Information. Misinformation. Disinformation, too."

Editor frowns. "This is pretty dark."

Me: "Oh. I forgot to tell you--while all this is going on, Donald Trump is President of the United States."

"GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY OFFICE!!!!"

You haven't heard a word from me since about Platner even though he still won't shut up :) And I've said: I want AES to win. Criticizing the left to make them better strategists isn't the same as just bitching out their policies, but people here have a hard time seeing that.

M. Gessen has written a truly extraordinary piece about the "soft fascism" faced by transgender people in America, and by trans people in Kansas particularly. Beautifully written and reported, deeply humane. I really hope you'll read it. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/13/o...
