But it has also underlined how important it is that we quickly finish the job of removing Stoats from the other islands. Special thanks to the Rousay volunteers, landowners and everyone that reported sightings as well as funders, donors, partners and RSPB members and supporters.

So, the confirmation that a Stoat had spread to Rousay was terrible news. Even by Orkney’s high standards Rousay is incredibly important for wildlife. That’s why it’s key that it’s been caught. This incident has shown what we can achieve for nature when we all work together.

Stoats aren’t native to Orkney and pose a serious threat to native wildlife. First reported in 2010, they are established across five of Orkney’s 70 islands (Mainland and the Linked Isles). The Orkney Native Wildlife Project is making good progress at removing every Stoat and wildlife is recovering.

🗣️ Some good news from Orkney! The invasive non-native Stoat that was confirmed on Rousay in May has been caught. This is great news for native wildlife like Hen Harriers and the Orkney Vole, and for the community who care so deeply about their island’s nature.

Monk parakeets, Parc de Joan Miró. Some 8,000 live in Barcelona in their voluminous communal nests. Very cute and colourful they may be, but they also have their impacts aside from infernal squawking. One of six parrot species which breeds here, the highest number I believe for any European city.
