My favorite fruit. Our tree was not its usual productive self this year so I’m also asking to use the neighbors’. I figured out how make a clear quince jelly that is the prettiest pink color. And tons of fruit leather. Iranians boil the seeds to soothe a sore throat.

The main problem with this method for today was the quantity of goose shit on the grass. The cider party has a good washing system thank goodness.

Ooh like the rollers they use for walnuts?? I’ve never seen them for apples. These trees had like three bad seasons in a row and they are really making up for it this year. They’re crunchy and sweet too.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

15 years ago today, Troy Davis was murdered by the state of Georgia. I still think of him today. I wonder if he knows how many people were transformed by his life and death.

Yeah, the days after were scary with lots of rumors of course but we also pretty much knew it was “over” - giving us lots of time to ruminate and narrativize and mythologize and collectively mourn.

I watched the first plane fly into the tower and went to work where we had no tvs- when they started talking about the buildings falling down i thought the same!! Like dominoes. (This is the some of the dissonance that sparked a lot of conspiracy theories I think)

And it was primary day so people were voting before work. And yeah, New Yorkers often get to work a bit later, in my experience, than in other American cities.

Molly Kovel @mlk39.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
So yeah I think the suffering of New Yorkers was not “more” than that of other residents of war zones. But the fact that it happened in this otherwise central and culturally singular city, and in the specific time-limited and aesthetic way that it happened— it’s got more impact than its death toll.

The other is that I don’t think another modern attack has been so spectacular, in the sense of full-on cinematic spectacle, at least not that I can think of. In that sense it was probably one of the most “successful” acts of violence in history. (I’m not praising the attackers obvs)

I have never lived in any other city under attack but my husband lived through the Iran Iraq war in Tehran and 9/11 in NYC he would say the former was substantially worse! But I think 2 things make 9/11 “special”- one is the incredible stability, in general, of living in the USA post wwII, and…

Thank you for your excellent essay. In the weeks after 9/11 I went regularly to the memorials that sprang up in Union Square and elsewhere. They were a welcome contrast to the drumbeats of war coming from the media and govt. People called for peace in the midst of all the grieving.

Today We Must Finally Remember What The 9/11 Commemorations Ignore
Righteous victimhood fueled the War on Terror. 25 years later, we also have to remember all of those slain under its banner

The Giuliani and Bush administrations were beating the drums of war; it seemed immediately obvious that we would be sending bombs, and soon. But people in Union Square rejected this, for the most part. There were numerous signs calling for peace. The 1000 cranes in my first photo, for instance.

I have a 9/11 story but it’s not super compelling. The thing I wanted to share today is the sense of collective grief that infused the city in the weeks afterward. These photos were taken at the massive Union Square memorial that I went to daily for a while. (I worked on 19th Street)
A blonde woman takes a photo of 1000 folded paper cranes at the memorial in Union Square A huge memorial in Union square full of flowers and candles. Some have umbrellas over them. Memorial for 9/11 victims in Union Square. You can sort of read one placard for Joshua Birnbaum (i looked him up, he worked at Cantor Fitzgerald)

From “The Car We Had to Push,” a chapter of “My Life and Hard Times.”
it fried the valves, or something. "Now don't you dare drive all over town without gasoline!" she would say to us when we started off. Gasoline, oil, and water were much the same to her, a fact that made her life both confusing and perilous. Her greatest dread, however, was the Victrola. We had a very early one, back in the "Come Josephine in My Flying Machine" days. She had an idea that the Victrola might blow up. It alarmed her, rather than reassured her, to explain that the phonograph was run neither by gasoline nor by electricity. She could only suppose that it was propelled by some newfangled and untested apparatus which was likely to let go at any minute, making us all the victims and martyrs of the wild-eyed Edison's dangerous experiments. The telephone she was comparatively at peace with, except, of course, during storms, whenfor some reason or other she always took the receiver off the hook and let it hang. She came naturally by her confused and groundless fears, for her own mother lived the latter years of her life in the horrible suspicion that electricity was dripping invisibly all over the house. It leaked, she contended, out of empty sockets if the wall switch had been left on. She would go around screwing in bulbs, and if they lighted up she would hastily and fearfully turn off the wall switch and go back to her Pearson's or Everybody's, happy in the satisfaction that she had stopped not only a costly but a dangerous leakage. Nothing could ever clear this up for her.

They are quite generous with replacements, at least the first time you ask. We got a new pot to replace one just like one of the smaller ones on your shelf that we definitely had misused. But of course they don’t make them with the spout or wood handles anymore. Still, free pot! Worth a shot.

There's no forgiving this. No living it down. It's a stain on our humanity. When all this is over, the monsters who did this should be pariahs. And the soulless thugs who cheered it on while dehumanizing Haitian immigrants should be reminded of what they did every day of their lives.
