Long time, no update. This is what I've been up to: Building a tall bike out of junk bicycles I've found on the streets.

Why would they not? lol. Let us not attribute imaginary qualities to our opposition. It's a recipe for underestimating them.

Ok, but you specifically said we should bring back dueling. That's not going to go well for anyone, especially people on the left, many of whom want nothing to do with guns

A huge swath of the right is just itching to get out their weapons and kill leftists. I don't think this would go the way you want it to.

Dreamt I was fencing with a woman while the song "What I Am" played in the background The woman had just been fencing against a friend of mine, and she was a cheat and a sore loser. She lost to my friend and was insulting her. When I stepped in to defend my friend, she challenged me to a duel.

My algorithm here broke again and now it only shows me people's pictures of plants. This is actually a huge improvement to this site.

that's very cool. I tried making an LED out of a chunk of silicon carbide crystals last year, and it kind of sort of worked, but not very well

This has not been an in-depth study. This is my first attempt, so I have no idea if there are clay bodies that are more appropriate than others

No, it's on top, but partially dissolved into the glaze
030
Emily @mle.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
there's no scooping. The clay is stamped with those traces while it's still moldable. The difficulty is glaze-firing a piece of ceramic with copper powder and ending up with conductive metal when it comes out of the kiln

Emily @mle.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
This has been a quixotic quest for no reason other than to see if i could do it, but I did do it: I've created a ceramic circuit board with copper traces that I can solder components to. Here's a little astable multivibrator circuit running on stoneware.

A depressed meteor with a 5 o'clock shadow sits at a bar. It says "I'm so fucked up. I can't live with myself knowing the death that I've caused." A person in a trenchcoat, scarf and fedora walks in and asks "are you the meteor that killed the dinosaurs?" The meteor replies "maybe... who are you?" The mysterious figure reveals itself to be a Triceratops, who hold a gun up to the meteor's head. It says "you should have finished the job, Mr. Meteor." The meteor grabs the barrel of the gun and jams it to its forehead. A single tear rolling down it's cheek, it shouts "DO IT!!! DO IT!!!"

no, everything shrinks by 12.5 percent when fired, at least with this particular clay body

I could see that improving the resolution, but not the strength. If I printed the stamp and die wheels in that orientation, they would be getting flexed along the grain whenever i emboss a letter. that seems like it would be weak

I do have a 3D printer. It's how I made the holder for the switch. I don't think an FDM printer can create fine-enough details for this kind of thing though. I would probably need a resin printer for this

And here it is done! This is a wild-clay glaze and wild clay stoneware. This bowl, like my recently finished mug, is 100 percent made of materials I gathered myself, without a single store-bought or studio-supplied ingredient. I loooove how this glaze looks.

Reminds me of my favorite photo of my grandfather, who was a great guy notwithstanding this depiction:
A farmer wearing a seed cap, dressed in all denim work clothes, and with a cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, has an orange cat on his lap. There is a can of Old Milwaukee beer balanced precariously on top of the cat's head. The cat does not look amused but is not trying to get away. The cat's name was either Sugar or Spice (they were littermates who looked a lot alike and I can't remember which this was).

Lucy snatches the football away from Charlie Brown causing him to fly up in the air and shout "AAUGH!" Charlie, however, continues to fall upwards. He says "haha yes, it is finally happening..." Lucy looks on in disbelief. Charlie rises and says "I am ascending to the realm of God to take my fated plave at his right hand." As he rockets into the stratosphere he shouts "this is the reward for my endless suffering! This is my reward!!"

Thinking about how well a refrigerator could run on solar power alone, without a storage battery. If some space were sacrificed in exchange for thermal mass (jugs of water), how well would it keep things cold from dusk to dawn while it's unpowered? I bet pretty well, if you didn't open the door much

Necessity breeds practicality. The civility was because we didn't want to get into violent conflicts with people defending their homes.

We didn't have computers anymore, and i thought a typewriter might be valuable for record keeping. I had to leave it behind though. It was heavy and until we had found a place to settle down, it didn't make sense to have to tote it around.

We had gotten pretty efficient at our jobs, but i also kept seeing other stuff i wanted to bring back, like a working typewriter.

If no one was living in the building, we would go to the kitchen to look for food like dried rice, beans, pasta, canned vegetables and fruit, etc, and to the bathroom to look for painkillers like NSAIDs and opioids, antibiotics, inhalers, aspirin etc.
