1.2 million foreign students represents just 6% of the 19.4 million students studying as of 2025. But even that is too high, as the 1.2 million number includes ~300,000 people on post-graduate Optional Practical Training (OPT), meaning foreign students are sub-5%.

Folks, stop whining about Wisconsin polling being off. The gold standard, Marquette Law, had Hong’s support dead on in this July 29 release. If you look at it closely, what’s obvious now is that this was her ceiling, and what was obvious even then— most of the electorate was figuring out what to do.

A reminder, as polls open in Wisconsin: Wisconsin has same-day voter registration. So, if you haven’t registered or need to re-register, you can do so at your polling place (with ID and proof of residence) TODAY. Every state should do this. It’s great that Wisconsin does this. Go vote.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that the first sentence of the 14th Amendment means exactly what it says: Birthright citizenship is the nation’s fundamental law, and Donald Trump cannot repeal it via executive order. The vote was 5–4. This outcome is, of course, a relief. But the margin is a scandal. It is nothing short of stunning that Trump came one vote away from convincing the Supreme Court to repeal the bedrock of the Reconstruction Amendments based on a brazenly partisan contortion of their text and history. A view held only by fringe, far-right nativists until very recently has secured support from four of the nine members of the court: Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh. This is a shocking development that should upend all expectations that this Supreme Court can be trusted to apply the most basic constitutional guarantees when a Republican president seeks to nullify them. If a theory flatly rejected by all serious legal scholars and historians can come one vote away from success, no rights are safe. Everything is on the table.

I have Josiah (Jed) Bartlet and Leo Thomas McGarry. Jed doesn’t really have a silly nickname, although sometimes I do call him my chonky boy. Leo has this very squeaky meow, so he often gets called Squeaky. If Lord John Marbury made an appearance, he would undoubtedly call him Gerald.

Josiah Bartlet (the cat) is a gray tabby who is sleepy and on my lap with his eyes just barely open. Leo is not pictured because he has climbed the cat tree for bed already.

Spent five nights in Budapest during Spring Break, leaving on April 2nd. Hungary is a wonderful country, and as a mathematician, I have had more opportunities than most Americans to get to know Hungarians. (My academic brother is Hungarian and my office neighbor at UW is as well.)

Festive baking! Dessert after Christmas dinner tonight was @americastestkitchen.com Mini Peanut-Praline Chocolate Pies. Three fun techniques: mini pie shells baked on inverted muffin tin, hard caramel + peanut butter in food processor for praline, and namelaka (~ganache with gelatin).
