An absolute Canadian legend. An incredibly lived in presence, making everything he was in that much better. I knew him very early on thanks to YTV.

THE SNIPER: Extraordinary picture with great sense of place. On-the-streets realism of serial killer on the loose. Simplified behavioral study but incredibly striking. #Noirvember

HOUSE OF STRANGERS: Family noir steeped in generational tradition and immigrant experience. Stellar cast with character actors Luther Adler, Efram Zimbalist Jr. & Paul Valentine plus Paget & Hayward! Aspects of the film feel related to THE GODFATHER - it's Richard Conte. #Noirvember

MINISTRY OF FEAR: Fritz Lang's paranoia-infused plunge into surreal dread. It's a stylish thriller with some of the biggest scissors you've ever seen on screen. A nightmare, pure and primal. #Noirvember

THIEVES HIGHWAY: Treachery abound in Dassin's classic. Conte delivers a riveting performance a war veteran turned trucker, who navigates the treacherous world of San Fran's produce market. When Nick seeks justice for his disabled father, he clashes with a chilling intense Lee J. Cobb. #Noirvember

Constantly in awe of the juxtaposition of Parisian streets to interiors. Legendary Miles Davis music, recorded in a single night, adds an unforgettable layer of melancholy and raw emotion, underscoring the characters' desperation and tragic fates. See it for Moreau if nothing else! 2/2 #Noirvember

ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS: Malle captures the essence of postwar disillusionment with its hauntingly beautiful visuals, thanks to Henri Decaë's masterful use of shadows, unique camera angles, and relentless tracking shots lending to urgency and claustrophobia. 1/2 #Noirvember

THE FACE BEHIND THE MASK: So economical in its execution. So biting in its critique of American assimilation. A great blend of Gangster B-movies and expressionistic horror. #Noirvember

BORDER INCIDENT: Anthony Mann’s direction heightens the tension, using shadows and striking cinematography to create an atmosphere that’s both suspenseful and socially aware. Montalban delivers charm and resolve, making the film as relevant today as it was when first released. #Noirvember

KISS OF DEATH: With a sadistic temperament and gritty realism steeped in shadow, this stands out for its gripping simplicity. Widmark delivers his most famous role as the chillingly psychopathic Tommy Udo, whose unsettling charisma and ruthless nature make him an unforgettable villain. #Noirvember

KISS ME DEADLY: Incendiary, fabulous; downright apocalyptic. One of the most pessimistic of film noirs. When Meeker's cracks open the box and that white hot light burns his hand? That kind of "oh, shit" moment; when you no longer know where the picture is going...That's what I live for. #Noirvember

TOUCH OF EVIL: Sleazy pulp meets cinematic elegance. From the iconic opening shot to labyrinthine plot twists, every frame heightens a world on the brink of chaos. Welles draws viewers into a nightmarish landscape, building to a fevered pitch. A haunting vision of #Noirvember

PALE FLOWER: Elegantly composed visuals evoking "bleak sadness and empty destiny." Delves into the lives of disillusioned characters trapped in cycles of violence and yearning. Hypnotic pacing; visual poetry casts a spell, leaving an unforgettable impression of loneliness & quiet despair #Noirvember

A damn fine display of both raw emotion and stylistic invention, making Fuller, and this film, a haymaker that feels like it sits perfectly on the edge of wanning '50s sensibilities and 1960s cinema abstract. #Noirvember 2/2

UNDERWORLD U.S.A.: Every scene hitting like a punch. Fuller expertly'S storytelling is driven by the elemental, oft-times violent, forces of human nature; characterized by blunt gestures and unflinching portrayals of the hardboiled. #Noirvember 1/2

#Noirvember adjacent. MAN HUNT: Fascinating and stylish speculative fiction. Amazing set-up; darkly atmospheric execution by Lang. George Saunders is a gem.

GILDA: Crackling with passion and dark glamour. Hayworth’s unforgettable, especially when paired with Ford. "Put the Blame on Mame" still captivates, defining the femme fatale. Power, jealousy, and the thin line between love and hate, this remains essential noir, as magnetic as ever. #Noirvember

DECOY (1946): Incredible cult noir gem that deserves a wider audience. Jean Gillie delivers one of the most ruthless, morally bankrupt femme fatales in film. With icy determination and a sense of twisted joy. Equal parts exhilarating and chilling, the film’s atmosphere oozes pure noir. #Noirvember

Keeping in with Fuller for this Noirvember. HOUSE OF BAMBOO: Perennial fav Robert Ryan + incredible locations heighten Fuller's Pulpy noir. Shot in expansive cimemascope.

PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET: Foils of doom inhabit Samuel Fuller's greed & redemption tale set during the red scare. A noir classic from a vicious craftsman with sweltering performances from Richard Widmark and Jean Peters.

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON: Simply no one is operating at this level. Couldn't believe I was sitting in a theater for over 200 minutes. Story wraps up in a way I wasn't expecting; echoing how history and, in particular, film aids in erasure, punctuated with one of the most powerful cameos I've seen.

The finale is truly a tour de force of fluid camera moves, cathartic revelations, and surreal style. I'll watch it every year around this time.

THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (1964): My favorite Poe/Corman. Perhaps the best movie Roger Corman ever made. Showcases a venomous performance from Price. A gorgeously shot (by Nic Roeg) Gothic horror film filled with satanism, suspenseful duels and outrageous costumes, and lighting.

THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM (1961) Stunning period horror. Still a B-movie at heart; the budget constraints, though modest, are used to dizzily effective heights. The last third of the movie allows Price to really let loose; contorting his body and elevating his voice with equal parts camp and bravado.

For my money, a sign of a pro is when those credits roll and the entire proceedings feel of continuous movement. This thing really comes together when that Cut To Black happens. God, I'll miss Friedkin. Also, a great closer for Lance Reddick.

The bluntness of Miriam Hopkin’s sexuality coupled with Hyde's abuse throughout the film’s running time more than creates a mood of terror and disturbing unease. The film’s opening scene, all shot through Jekyll's POV, is still incredibly impressive. I'd say Mamoulian is vastly underrated today.

DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE: More from Criterion Channel's Pre-Code Horror Collection. Made the same year as Frankenstein, the Freudian, sexual perversity of Rouben Mamoulian’s. lays out the iconic story with visual gusto. Frederich March won an Oscar for Best Actor, a rarity for a horror film.

The taboo subject matters range from sexual deviancy, bestiality, surgical torture, and the act of creating life. All subjects that would be off-the-table just two years later under the Hays code. Worth seeing for Laughton's performance as Moreau (Lugosi, too!) and the incredible makeup effects.

THE BLACK CAT: Filled with a cynical yet melancholic approach to its storytelling. Startling set-design (an avant-garde masterpiece), beautiful B&W cinematography, and a creepy, sparse sound design. Throw in some live-skinning for good measure! One of the better horror films from the pre-code era.

Opening scene is startlingly grisly that it still giddily shocks. Lionel Atwill plays a gleefully sadistic zoo owner who snuffs out several competitors by using his animals in ever more dastardly ways. Good, good stuff.

All of the Roald Dahl short films, watched together, make for such a treat. Stagecraft that feels as authentic as it does artificial; pushing Anderson's storytelling to its most literal. I found them to be major works, running the gamut from joyous to horrific. What a 2023 for Wes Anderson!

One year later, rewatching Rob Zombie's THE MUNSTERS. Zombie says he wasn’t allowed to shoot his adaptation in black-and-white, so he made his dream film ‘as hyper surreal as possible.' I still really dig what the guy was doing with this one.
