Jonathan Hau-Yoon conceived Dressmaker after looking for a project with a personal subject. His partner, Sabrina Becker, was an experienced dressmaker with an interest in fashion history who had considered pursuing costume design professionally before
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome prevented her from doing so. She had worn a dress of her own doing so. making on the couple's first date. The pair based the game on decisions involved in actual garment construction, including fitting pattern pieces onto a limited quantity of fabric, working with the grain of the material, choosing trims and buttons, and responding to commissions from clients.
