Yes, Matthew is the source of the infamous "skull" face hurricane satellite image, which emerged just before landfall in Haiti.

Matthew holds the record for the southernmost Cat 5 in the Atlantic basin, and ended the 2008-2015 Cat 5 drought. Since Matthew there have been 12 more Atlantic Cat 5s. The storm is regarded as the worst weather disaster in Haiti's recent history. Aftermath via NYT: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Ten years ago today (eastern time): Hurricane Matthew reaches Category 5 intensity, the first to do so since Felix (2007). Matthew caused devastation across the Caribbean, esp. in Haiti, where over 500-1000 people were killed and cholera cases spiked across the impoverished southern region.

Actually 3-4 distinct mesovorts can be seen in the eye which makes the weak(?) convective/brightness temp asymmetries weird to me. Also WWLLN supports there being virtually no eyewall lightning during Nolo's deepening over the past 24h (wwlln.net#animations -> GOES18). Even weakening Polo had more.

Again I'm noticing an annular appearance (latest SHIPS annular hurricane index is 80/100) and relatively weak/low-topped eyewall asymmetries similar to Karina. Interestingly Nolo's presentation here looks kind of "in between" those of Karina and Lowell in the quoted post's snapshots.

A case of a rapidly strengthening TC with eyewall lightning nearly completely absent, assuming there's no undersampling. To me this suggests distinct modes of vortex structure during intensification.

Very forceful statement by Terry Tao about AI and math. terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a... Note, he is not claiming the models aren't real and powerful. He's talking about how that power should be used. This, I believe, is what all AI discussions should center.

Wow. My first dentist appointment here was ~3.5k yen (about $22). Follow up visits are ~1k. They said I'll need five or six follow ups to fully clean my teeth (they only do portions at a time, each visit is ~30 mins), but still I'm maybe looking at <$60 for a cleaning + small chipped tooth fix.

Continuing to point at the part of the first allegations where OpenAI effectively said "we'll let you claim credit for your proof if you remove your co-author from your other proofs because they work for Anthropic" which is not in fact how any of this works and is extremely shady shit

I dreamed a while back I corrected someone to use my new name lol. I do miss the diminutive ending of my old name but one reason I chose July is that it could be pronounced Julie. One of my biggest Qs rn is what to do when publishing, not that I need to have an answer yet. Transitioning is weird.

Some reflections after one month. Noticing more and more signs that I'm starting to identify more as my new name. It's feeling less weird, for one. I'm starting to think about myself and my place in the world in terms of July. Meanwhile hearing my old name is becoming more jarring and dysphoric.

Some kind of weird (barotropic?) instability occurred along the eyewall edge of Hurricane Lowell. Reminds me of those wispy cirrus swirls you sometimes see in the eye at sunrise.

I use the words intensity, weakening, etc very loosely. Asymmetries, radial/vertical profiles, etc are not (and obv aren't supposed to be) encapsulated by max winds (also estimated here by satellite). The 3-D vortex structure and evolution are far more relevant than the capital-I intensity itself.

July (they/them) @misovortex.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
The most obvious differences are Lowell's small eye w/ bursting convection & significantly colder CDO Tbs vs Karina's annular presentation. Karina has also been steadier than still-intensifying Lowell. But that's not nearly enough physical info. Steady/weakening TCs do have these eyewall outbreaks.

Two TCs with nearly identical intensity, but only one with an electrified eyewall. Finding out why is really interesting to me and IMO would strongly benefit storm nowcasting. Definitely on my "millenium prize" list of TC internal dynamics questions.

No tropical storm-strength systems have formed in the northern Indian Ocean so far this year (climatology for today is 9.5 ACE, also activity usually shuts off from June-Sep). It would be interesting to see east and central Pacific separately, but I don't really have time to do it myself.

I never shared this footage publicly before, & since then I actually deleted most of my video from Ida. I hated what I saw in the midst of it, from the suffering of the people sheltering in the hotel to the damage in the town afterward. For some things I don't need much more than the memory to carry

Ida was the last major hurricane I chased. This is footage of the strongest conditions at my location in Houma. I vaguely recall winds like this were intermittent but short lived, so maybe caused by a roll or inner band. We didn't get deep into the eyewall, but this might be representative of it.

Five years ago today: Hurricane Ida makes landfall in Louisiana with maximum winds of 150mph (240km/h). Later as an extratropical cyclone, Ida caused destructive flooding and a tornado outbreak across the northeast U.S., ultimately resulting in at least $75 billion in damages and 87 deaths.

Fun with RGB channels. Video shows false color imagery of Lala's intensification into a major hurricane over the course of yesterday (Aug 18 local time). Lala currently threatens #Kauō / #Laysan in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands w/ 125mph (205km/h) winds, but is expected to weaken from here on.

To be fair when I was going through all the data for that paper (I must have looked at over 10,000 sweeps) I purposefully limited myself to hurricane strength and higher. Tropical storms would just have been too much. And those wouldn’t really have added any meaningful results on top imo.

July (they/them) @misovortex.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Very subtle in this case but consistent with the disappearance of the signal at higher elevation sweeps. This would be the first time I’ve seen misovorts in a tropical storm strength system barring post season upgrade. All cases in our paper were C1 or higher. journals.ametsoc.org/view/journal...

Longer animation. The misovortices seemed to develop in a jet that flowed toward/“connected” with the outward adjacent main eyewall, similar to behavior in storms like Hurricane Hanna 2020 just before landfall. bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/hann...

Possible misovortices in the eastern eyewall of #Lala as seen from the shortwave finger shaped echoes with elevated spectrum widths. Difficult to confirm because of beam blockage.
