Ok so. Who would like to hear a story. Many of you know about my nemesis, the Viriginia opossum. Do not @ me with the thing about how omg they eat ticks; that's been disproven. (See Hennessy, Hild (2021) doi.org/10.1016/j.tt... ) This is a story about a different kind of possum. A better kind.

I'm devastated to report that my order from this place showed up today, and while I do not think it can be said to make me hot unless you're into a very specific middle-aged soft-butch aesthetic, this is already some of my favourite clothing, holy shit.

I'm sorry, but 'good person' is not a definable characteristic in a fucking job ad.
screenshot from a job ad that says 'You need to be a good person, with a strong creative edge, confident and capable in following procedures and timelines for your role in a work-from-home setting.'

I would like this whole Woolworths strike to end, primarily because workers should be treated with dignity and respect, but secondarily and rather more selfishly, because it's reminding me how much I fucking hate Coles.

Heartbreaking: local guy so excited about eating mangoes on yoghurt that they forgot to check that the mangoes were, in fact, *ripe enough to eat*. At least I realised before I cut into one?

Honestly, with absolutely no kindness at all: if someone tells you they had a shitty childbirth experience, don't say 'at least everyone's ok!' or, worse, 'at least the baby's ok!' Say you're sorry, offer support if you can, listen. Do *not* respond by talking about your positive birth experience.

Exceptionally still water at the Japanese garden today meant that I was able to get this shot of Koi swimming in reflected clouds..
Crisp image of a mostly cloudy sky, with faint outlines of bright orange koi that appear to be swimming in the clouds.

Oh look, it's the ecologically justified genocide again! Not everyone needs (or is able to take, or can afford) a daily preventative inhaler. Corticosteroids are amazing for people who need them, but they're drugs with side effects and contraindications, same as everything else.

You would sort of think that having the gmail address of legal first+last name would mean that, at least, you only get misdirected email looking for people who share your name. So, then, why is some fucking guy called Kenneth using my email to apply for a bunch of sketchy online loans? 💀💀💀

Lately I've had several conversations with people worried about access to medical care, and realised that many people have never dealt with minimal health care access, so: a brief thread. Up front: This isn't US-specific. The world is unpredictable. We should all be prepared to care for ourselves.

I wrote this at kind of an awkward time (when like 90% of the internet was…y'know, asleep) so I'm gonna repost it now, sorry. I promise I won't make a habit of this. Also the first post is a lie; it was not actually brief. Sorry for that, too.

Well, the thrilling conclusion to this is that I opened the tofu and despite having a week left on the package, it was so disgustingly gone off that I couldn't even bear to put it in the kitchen bin and had to take it outside, so, uh. That's sorted, anyhow? 💀

misha fletcher @mishafletch.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
It's going to be very disgusting this weekend, and I have a block of tofu I need used. I need to cook it today, then toss it in the fridge for a day or two. We eat a lot of tofu, but I rarely cook ahead. I'm leaning mapo tofu, but am willing to be convinced otherwise if anyone has ideas?

It's come to my attention elsewhere that not everyone has seen this news: According to GoodReads/Locus/Fantastic Fiction/others (but notably *not* Amz), there's a new book in Connie Willis's Oxford Time Travel series dropping in June 2025! [crowd goes wild] One more reason to stay alive. 💕

I am once again reconstructing my Plex server (my fault; database corruption that I missed for…way too long) but am also considering my organisational structure. If you have a large media library, how do you organise it? Just tv/movies/etc? Do you use collections? Separate libraries by [criteria]?

I always forget that Bluesky threads oddly, so many people are missing the sequel to the post about Mr Bingley bravely inspecting my groceries. Please do not miss this post. He is a menace. You can't trust in appearances! He's not *just* soft and beautiful and fluffy, he's also a problem 😔

Hey who wants to see everyone's best friend Mr Bingley again? (everyone wants that) Yesterday was grocery delivery day! Shocking no one, this meant more bok choy. Also cucumbers and mushrooms and peaches and things like that. Inspector Bingley, nebby little shit, was on the case. Inspecting.
a large black box with a bunch of bok choy in it, as well as assorted other produce.a cat is craning his neck to get it over the edge of the produce box. he looks weirdly intent and has his nose pressed against the edge of one of the bok choy leaves

I understand why everything has apparently moved to Discord, etc, but I miss being able to search for something, find a forum about it, search (no signup!) to see if the question I have has already been asked, and then if not, sign up and ask…without being haunted by it forever and ever.

Alt text serves as a lot of different purposes, too! All of which improve accessibility (for more than just people with vision-impairments). I use it quite often to understand memes and read fine-print screenshots.
Why use alt text? (6 panel comic)

Slow internet
Alt text is shown in place of unloaded images
Drawing of a browser screen with a social media post and a square for a photo that has text in it instead of a picture

Findability
Alt text helps to search content
Browser search screen
Search query: "dog with banana"
Social media post search return has a banana in it

Screen readers
Alt text is read out to people using text-to-speech software
Picture of.a black screen with white text and an arrow pointing to it saying "alt text"

 Translation
Alt text can be translated
Google translate English to German output
"Haha ein hund" over a picture with German alt text describing a dog.

Readability
Text in images can be made legible
Stick man with a hard-to-read speech bubble.
Alt text pointing to speech bubble: "character says 'hello guys'"

 Disambiguation
Description helps clarify intent
Picture of what could be a duck with its beak open or a rabbit with its head tilted up, ears tilted back. Alt text reads "my pet bunny"

Lately I feel sort of like the nature of existence is such that we should produce more Substances, and somehow also make them safer and more accessible. It seems like we should all be able to dial our experience of things up or down, as desired/needed, you know?

I think that an underrated thing about Australia is how straightforward some of the food names are. There's a whole line of flavoured crackers just called Shapes. What kind of shapes? Well. Some of them. Certainly at least one, probably. Similarly, candy that's straight-up called Lumps. Just. Lumps.
