NGC 602: Stars Versus Pillars from Webb - Pic - HD Pic - About Astronomy Picture Of the Day #astrophotos Maintained by @shinyakato.dev 🔭 READ MORE 🔭

The stars are destroying the pillars. More specifically, some of the newly formed stars in the image center are emitting light so energetic that is evaporating the gas and dust in the surrounding pillars. Simultaneously, the pillars themselves are still trying to form new stars. The whole setting is the star cluster NGC 602, and this new vista was taken by the Webb Space Telescope in multiple infrared colors. In comparison, a roll-over image shows the same star cluster in visible light, taken previously by the Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 602 is located near the perimeter of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a small satellite galaxy of our Milky Way galaxy. At the estimated distance of the SMC, the featured picture spans about 200 light-years. A tantalizing assortment of background galaxies are also visible -- mostly around the edges -- that are at least hundreds of millions of light-years beyond.

Ghost girls with ghost cats, courtesy of a double exposure. Photo from my collection- no documented info on it. 👻

Two white girls in cold weather outfits, posing for a photo, each holding a longhaired cat. They appear to be somewhat translucent apparitions on a wooden house porch due to a double exposure on the film.

I love this cat statue from Iran! Please zoom in to see the fine textures and designs on the surface. Ca 1850 - 1900. collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/5335...

Very nice modern studio photograph of a metal cat sculpture. It is stylized and almost cartoonish but in an artful way. It is made from steel that is blackened and decorated with delicate gold ornamentation. The steel seems matte at first but closer examination reveals it is beautifully detailed with fur texture and floral designs. The cat it in a half- standing sort of crouch, looking upward with a somewhat humanoid face, as if begging for food from above.

Thor not only has his own day (Thursday), but a helmet in the heavens. Popularly called Thor's Helmet, NGC 2359 is a hat-shaped cosmic cloud with wing-like appendages. Heroically sized even for a Norse god, Thor's Helmet is about 30 light-years across. In fact, the cosmic head-covering is more like an interstellar bubble, blown with a fast wind from the bright, massive star near the bubble's center. Known as a Wolf-Rayet star, the central star is an extremely hot giant thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova stage of evolution. NGC 2359 is located about 15,000 light-years away toward the constellation of the Great Overdog. This remarkably sharp image is a mixed cocktail of data from narrowband filters, capturing not only natural looking stars but details of the nebula's filamentary structures. The star in the center of Thor's Helmet is expected to explode in a spectacular supernova sometime within the next few thousand years.

Black and white photo of a young white girl with blonde curls wearing a frilly, light colored dress, sitting on top of a low brick wall. She is smiling and looking down at a shiny shorthaired black tuxedo cat which is standing with its hind legs on the ground but forelegs up on the wall so that it can drink from the white saucer placed there.

I am never not thinking about this

4 panel comic of a man introducing himself as Jason, then the other guy plucks the name out of the speech bubble and crams it though his forehead into is skull. but his skull is already full of boxes labeled "friends" "family" and taking up 90% of the space is a big box labeled "brassica oleracea" so the box labeled Jason gets crumpled immediately. the guy then replies, "say Jarvis, did you know that over a dozen common vegetables are actually the same plant species?"
