language model programs have no conscious intent or ethical understanding and they never will. you can program them to say they do, but they fundamentally cannot

While looking for something else in the Imperial War Museum's online collections I found this 1943 painting by (Lt-Cdr) James Yunge-Bateman: 'The Outside Viewing-tank : Directorate of Camouflage, Naval Section'. Somewhat off-topic for me, but too appealing not to post. IWM (Art.IWM ART LD 2759).
James Yunge-Bateman, 'The Outside Viewing-tank : Directorate of Camouflage, Naval Section' (1943). Imperial War Museum (Art.IWM ART LD 2759). Image: a young bespectacled woman leans into the composition from the left with her hands submerged in a water tank. The viewing-tank appears to be on the roof of a building as there is a blue sky with clouds and the green dome of a building in the background. A camouflaged model of an aircraft carrier floats on the water and a pair of binoculars sit on the edge of the tank, in the right foreground. (ALT text description from the IWM.)

I think my favourite moment in all Star Wars media is during the battle of Hoth and there's a PA announcement that the first transport got away, followed by an insert shot of random rebels being like 🙋 yay

Posting a meme with this image? Don't forget alt text. In a still from "Widow's Bay," a smiling older woman wears a sweatshirt with flowers on it, and has headphones resting around her neck. She's standing in a living room. The back of a man's head and shoulders appears in the left foreground.

The inalienable rights of the reader, by Daniel Pennac (translation in alt)
1.	The right not to read
2.	The right to skip pages
3.	The right not to finish a book
4.	The right to re-read
5.	The right to read anything
6.	The right to "Bovary-ism," a textually transmitted disease (the right to want a life like in the books)
7.	The right to read anywhere
8.	The right to peck here and there
9.	The right to read out loud
10.	The right to be silent

I wouldn't call myself a cartoonist, but I had the vision and just needed it to be on paper to the best of my ability.
A hand drawn eight panel cartoon. First two panels are a colander sitting frowning on a shelf. Then the colander is frowning straining pasta, then three more panels of frowning sitting on a shelf. Then a big panel where it's projecting a bunch of crescent eclipse shapes and smiling with speech bubbles around saying "Wow! Look! Amazing! Beautiful!" And then one final panel where it's sitting on a shelf smiling.

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

really a masterclass example of "why does midfield matter" that Spain used their advantages in midfield and in the press to keep the ball but also to take away France's primary idea -- transition attacking -- and nullified the most talented attacking four in the world
