With the flurry of holiday activity over the last few weeks, it's been a minute since I introduced you to another member of the LABZIK universe. Meet sister Rifkele.
Rifkele portrayed as a smiling, short-haired cartoon girl inside an ornate gold oval frame on a pink background, with the headline "Meet Rifkele" above and the caption "kind, patient, and a great communicator" below.

I’m grateful to Miriam for many real and important reasons but among them is her willingness to let me stage my Coconut dog (don’t forget I’m still hawking An American Girl Anthology!!!) alongside Sukkot ephemera 🌿

Labzik never had a lulav—until now! My intrepid publicist @justineodashs.bksy.social is preparing for Sukkot and couldn’t resist bringing Labzik into the process—though this is not *quite* in line with the religiocultural sphere of Chaver-Paver’s original stories, he looks pretty cute 🌿

Before the end of #womenintranslationmonth, I wanted to reflect on the joy of co-teaching a seminar about the theory and practice of literary translation at @emorycollege.bsky.social with Professor Didem Uca, who translates between German, Turkish, and English.
a photo of Miriam Udel under text that says "Women in Translation Month", with an additional block of text that reads:

"The process of bringing a text from one language into another always involves some trade-offs,” Udel says. “There’s a polarity between whether the translator is in a subservient position to the original author or if they become a co-creator...

There are going to be sacrifices, but there are also moments of incredible problem solving, when you figure out, as a translator, something that feels equivalent or feels like it has an equivalent impact to what the original words do.”

We've reached the midway point in the workweek, and the midway point in introducing you to Labzik's family! Though I have no bias, Mulik is really someone special. Meet brother Mulik. He’s brave, clever, opinionated, and a bit stoical when the going gets tough.

Meet Berl. He’s a little grumbly, sometimes letting loose a gentle “dad curse.” But Berl’s got a heart of gold. What would he do if he saw a dog shivering on the elevated train platform in the rain? Wrap him up in the Morgen Freiheit and bring him home, of course! sunypress.edu/Books/L/Labzik

I just wanted to share this because 1. This is the kind of history I truly love, the history of the overlooked and every day, how did people actually live and think and the little things that inform the big things
A scholarly study visualized through a humane lens, this book explores how ambitious modern movements for social transformation looked on an intimate scale: as intimate as the nursery where a parent reads to a young child, or the dark room where a preteen reads herself to sleep by flashlight. Such humble and easily overlooked spaces offer a fresh perspective on the forces that made Jewry modern. At the same time, many of these texts expose the wellspring of deep Jewishness, yiddishkeyt,
