I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-ope…

Nobody pays for open source. We can force them to. | Seldo.com
Thirty years of voluntary funding schemes haven't paid open source maintainers because asking doesn't scale. The real money already flows — to JFrog, Docker, Sonatype — at the registry layer. The fix: registries charge companies for supply (they already do), then route a slice automatically to the maintainers who make that supply worth having.

2026 @localfirstconf.com is truly one of the few places that unite disparate communities—open source, LLMs, p2p, interface design, standards—behind a shared value: user agency and empowerment. How refreshing to witness the openness and curiosity everyone brings to the discussion.

Been experimenting with did-method-webvh in the atproto-identity crate, and it's got me thinking: we urgently need to extend did-method-plc to support multiple registries. This is critical infrastructure and is long overdue. 🧵

I'm not afraid of the screen itself, but of the fact that too many apps require dangerous capabilities. I know the ux of permissions is still an unsolved problem.

We really really really need a better auth model here. Most apps request this kind of access. Even with the best of intentions, it is scary. How about @ucan.xyz instead (or as well) ?
Screenshot of a typical atproto authorization screen (as of Apr 2026) where an app can essentially do anything once granted:

Manage profile, posts, likes, and follows, as well as read private prefs.

Create read, update, and delete any public record.

the weird thing about companies and open source is that it's incredibly easy to make a fucking huge impact and almost no companies do so many companies could just bankroll the IBB as a write off, and yet... we've lost it. there's so many easy wins and instead you're worried about AI SEO instead 🙄

In 2026, manually ssh’ing to a production server and changing its configuration is a clear anti-pattern. Let’s do the same for software changes. Humans don’t change software. Only their agents do. Sounds irresponsible until you examine the ramifications of that constraint.

At this point in time ZKal needs more awareness. Tomorrow it'll be the norm, as long as we don't stop thinking of privacy as normal.

Mircea Nistor @mirceanis.xyz · 29/03/2026
Keep at it! I believe that ideas like ZKal need extra effort to be internalized, to be considered "natural". Anything privacy related requires deep thought until it clicks. For some, it never does.
