I haven't seen anything in any of the promotional stuff... Are these No Kings protests at least explicitly anti-war? Something like 75% of Americans oppose the war, not making this a key focus right now would be a staggering mistake.

So where on that graph do you think Citizens United happened?

If I gave you a graph of overall spending on elections and took away the years and the $ amounts, you wouldn't be able to place Citizens United on it. Citizens United only enabled a preexisting trend to continue at roughly the rate it has before. Here, I'll prove it! Where do you think it was?
Bar chart of spending on elections depicting spending by Democrats and by Republicans per year, with the dollar totals scribbled out and the years cut off.

My solution is the only one that has ever historically worked to change an oligarchy's grip on a country: mass organizing and starting a workers party. There's literally never been a single time in history where fascism has just been voted out. Not in Germany, not in Italy, Japan, or Spain.

So no, the opportunity isn't the primary. This "opportunity" is a 1 in 10 shot to win regardless of how much you outperform your opponent. It's just not true this is a viable pathway to change the party. But I mean, hey, if you're ok losing to fascists, why change a thing!

You need to engage with the facts: In American elections, the candidate that spends more wins 9/10 times. The Democratic Party funds centrist candidates to ensure they get more funding in every election. This means that regardless of how persuasive anyone is, centrists are winning 9/10 times.

We don't understand how Democrats had two presidential elections where they focused on this messaging that Trump is so evil any reasonable person should choose the other option, and they lost to the most unpopular candidate in American history, twice. Why is this still seen as viable messaging?

MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
"It works 1 in 10 times" is closer to the truth, and there is no political system in history that has been changed when the people who would enact that change can only win 1 in 10 elections even when they're more persuasive.

MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
In a system where the candidate that spends more wins in 9/10 times, that's just not engaging with reality.

Shame the Democratic party will abuse the pay to play electoral system to heavily favor centrists. What you're talking about works iff the primaries are truly open and unbiased. As it stands, money dictates outcomes and the Dems make sure centrists get more money.

Change your heart. Assign responsibility where it belongs: not with the "personal responsibility" of millions of people navigating a system they have little to no control over, but with the handful with the most control over the outcome of that system - those who control the parties and campaigns

Putting homeless people in empty warehouses is not humane! How many people have died in ICE camps already, this year? ICE is putting them in these camps previously bc they don't care about their health. Also, this is bipartisan! Look at Newsom demolishing homeless people's shelters.

Democrats could win the House and Senate, then the presidency in 2028, and all it would accomplish was ensuring a fascist Republican in 2032.

Are you okay with slavery as a punishment for a crime??????? I'm not okay with slavery under any circumstances, actually, wtf is this logic...

MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
Chattel slavery and prison slavery are both slavery despite their differences, and it's hideously cruel to suggest that an enslaved person isn't actually enslaved because you confused the difference. Please stop, now, it's grotesque what you're doing.

MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
It is deeply offensive to say that someone explicitly held in slavery, who has to do slave labor, is not a slave because they do not have it as bad as chattel slaves, to whom I never once compared them. Again, you're putting words in my mouth! Stop, please.
100 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
It is literally slavery. It's offensive to people subjected to this to call it *not* slavery because you can't distinguish between chattel slavery and prison slavery.

In what way is responding to a post about reasons to boycott America asking about other similar reasons to boycott America like talking about the price of eggs in Kazakhstan in response to someone talking about their mother's cancer?
010 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
I'm responding about boycotting America to someone posting about boycotting America. This is exactly the topic, actually. What logic justifies boycotting the US because of a labor camp that does not moreso justify boycotting the US for having 2 million prison slaves?
110 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
Americans have gotten great material benefit from harming others, both around the world (the global south is gutted for US opulence) and domestically (where a racialized proletariat does back breaking work for the benefit of a mostly white settler class).
030 3
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
The vast majority of American workers are labor aristocrats who are handsomely rewarded for their loyalty to empire. The median American income is in the global top 10%. America is one of like 2 or 3 countries where the average wealth would decrease were global wealth to be equally distributed.

MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
That is, before Trump, the US still had a half dozen colonial occupations, still had 2 million prison slaves, was still supplying 70% of Israeli arms and total diplomatic cover in the UN for the genocide, was still responsible for the destruction of Haiti, and on and on. Why only now boycott?
210 2
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
All of the examples I gave were of the US doing much worse things than a labor camp, is my point, so I'm asking why start the boycott now under Trump? Or put another way, doesn't any rationale that supports boycotting Israel surely support the same for the US for almost all history?
110 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
Again, I'm not using hyperbole (what do you even think is hyperbolic??), and you were not just asking for clarification. Your first reply was literally not even a question, come on...
100 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
And it's super fair to be annoyed at that! Sorry for the offense, but maybe the best way to avoid this is not posting increasingly inflammatory suggestions about what I might be saying.
100 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
I think it's super fair to read that question as a not-so-thinly veiled way to suggest what I'm saying, though. In the context of this being a reply to another post also suggesting I'm saying something I didn't ("nothing changed"), it seems like this is exactly what you were doing, actually.
100 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
I'm using absolutely zero hyperbole. The explicit text of the thirteenth amendment says that slavery of imprisoned people is legal. There are about 2 million people in the US who meet that criteria and their slave labor is used all the time in every state.
000 0
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
Don't get me wrong I'm all for supporting this boycott! At the same time, I also want to understand why it seems like a lot of people consider 1 labor camp more objectionable than prison slavery, 6 different colonial occupations, supporting a genocide, starving millions, or what the US does to Haiti
130 3
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
I mean this genuinely bc I really do want to understand this apparent dissonance: what about Trump and this camp make this a boycott you want to engage in that wasn't satisfied with the total support for Israel's campaign of extermination in Gaza or the starvation of nearly 2 million Afghanis?
320 3
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
Where did I say Palestinian citizens of Israel were slaves or that nothing has changed under Trump?
110 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 08/07/2025
No, the US has about 2 million prisoners and prison slavery is explicitly legal per the text of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Israel is committing genocide, though, so I'm curious to hear why you think boycotting a state for a labor camp is warranted but not not for supporting genocide.
130 3
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
South Korean senators scaled 2m high spiked walls to get into the parliament to vote despite being locked out by the police. You look at that and then look at what the Democrats have done and tell me if you think they're doing everything they can or not.

I'm a communist lmao I did not put anyone anywhere. I am absolutely and happily decrying the breathless performative outrage that seems to be the full extent of "resistance" we can expect from liberals.
110 1
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
Or why is it more justified to boycott a country for having a labor camp than it is to boycott them for the several ongoing colonial occupations (PR, Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, Marianas) subjugating millions of people? How did Jim Crow or indigenous genocides also not merit this in spades?
000 0
MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
I never said nothing has changed, but I would love for you, if you genuinely disagree with what I *did* say, to argue that it's justified to boycott a state for having a labor camp but not a country with 2 million prisoners on whom it practices legal slavery.

MirA @miravus.bsky.social · 06/07/2025
While the sentiment is clearly heartfelt and we think it's not wrong, it belies that this would have been equally true at every point in American history (at least as long as we don't treat the harms right now as special only because Trump does them).
