Off my Moonshot announcement, I‘ve been getting a lot of Q’s about fellowships and how to get in. The one I want to focus on is how many tries and scripts it takes to get into programs. People assume you apply once and get it. Nothing could be father from the truth. Here’s my fellowship breakdown:

Next week I’m pitching my show and tomorrow is practice pitch with a showrunner in the fellowship I’m in. And this is my horoscope. 💫

Screenwriting Reddit is filled with people who have never worked in Hollywood who are absolutely convinced they know how it works in Hollywood.

Super stoked to be a part of Moonshot’s Pilot Accelerator! We get to pitch our bad-ass shows to 20 studios and production companies including ABC, Hulu, Netflix and HBO in a few weeks. LET’S GO!

The more studios continue to eat each other, the more indie film, digital series, narrative podcasts, books and other mediums of storytelling are going to thrive. This is where we’re being driven whether we like it or not. So let’s make it happen our way. 💪

Kalos was in the CAPE Writers Program. Lauren is a CBS Writers Mentoring Program alum. Don’t let anyone tell you fellowships don’t lead to immense success! Sometimes immediately, sometimes down the road. But eventual success all the same. As an alum of both fellowships I’m SUPER stoked for them! 🎊

Well I guess it needs to be said again: Please don’t send writers and producers unsolicited scripts or materials. We cannot legally accept these from you! I guess someone added me to database of ProdCos. Now I’m getting unsolicited scripts weekly. They get trashed unread. Sorry.

Anthony Head was the nicest actor I’ve ever met. Appreciative of his colleagues, excited when people talked to him about his music, and genuinely interested in conversation with his fans. I met him with Nicholas Brendon in 2011. I can’t believe they’re both gone now! www.bbc.com/news/article...

So. ESEs are being forced to take SW jobs by studios. Lower Levels can’t sell because they’re being told they need a Showrunner attached to even be considered (but no Showrunner will risk attaching to LL projects rn/their agents are talking them out of it. What are we supposed to do then?!!!!

I will add that this is why all the biggest shows on TV — The Pitt, Paradise, Pluribus — have lower and mid level writers in their room. A good showrunner knows a room with 5 Co-EPs and 1 SW is an ego-clash nightmare. You need to delegate at all levels and trust all levels otherwise you burn out.

Wow. Suddenly this week it seems like there’s a huge uptick in things getting greenlit and TV jobs starting to ramp up. I always suspected things would improve up after the WGA/AMPTP 2026 negotiations were done, but didn’t wanna be hopeful. Still not sure I should dare to hope! But maybeeeee? 🤔

The Mediator series by Meg Cabot. Amazon has the rights and there is (was?) a pilot being developed but I don’t know more than that. If anyone does, let me know. Would give my left arm to staff on that show if it goes!

Someone on the other app asked why Screenwriters don’t just go out and make their own features. I was like “Uh. With what money?” And then one dude (why is it always a dude) says “Well, Frances Ha was made for NO MONEY.” The budget for Frances Ha was $3 million. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The thing with writing 614427 samples, is that at first no one will want them. And then one day, one of them will become a hot spec 6 years later. Because good scripts don’t die. If you keep advocating for them, they find their way.

Just so everyone knows — WGA has told Captains that what is being reported in the media regarding negotiations with the AMPTP is being reported without authorization and may not be completely accurate. A deal is not yet finalized. They will let everyone know when it is.

Paradise needs to pull a Pitt and be 15 eps a season. Whoever at Hulu needs to make it happen. Because HOW IS THE SEASON ALREADY OVER?! Can you imagine if LOST had been 8 eps? Come on! 😅 No more 8 episode seasons, please! We need more time with these characters!

Have been saying this for a while! AI cannot grow, not just because it’s a space issue, but because human creation is finite and AI is running out of stuff to learn from and consume. People keep saying the tech will grow fast. But it can’t coz it’s limited to human creation. It cannot surpass that.

Sometimes when I’m writing, I’ll put on the pilot of a show in the background. Just the pilot. Just for fun. Right now I have True Blood on. I remember it being a strong pilot. But watching it now, it’s even better than I remember! A masterclass in world building, character intros and structure.

If anyone’s curious as to what kind of show I’d want to staff on at some point, the answer is The Night Agent. As a former investigative/spy research documentarian plus someone with action and procedural experience, I feel like this is the kinda thing I’d be good at. It’s just actiony fun!

I think we all need to stop chasing a success trend just because it worked for someone else. “Create a podcast!” “Pivot to Features because there’s no TV jobs!” “Write a novel/short story and create IP!” I’ve done all of the above. They’ve all been successful in their own way. But… (1/2)

Back then there were shows that staffed writers straight out of college. And now? A staff writer is expected to function on the same level as a co-EP. A super realistic and not at all insane expectation. They want everyone to be a Berlanti. Except if you’re a POC who is. Then it doesn’t count. 🙃

This is the quote he's referring to and damned if every one of us who's worked in traditional tv prior to the streaming era isn't silently screaming in frustration right now. TV worked perfectly well before everyone tried to become GoT
question and answer on a deadline interview with HBO chief Casey Bloys. Deadline: is the success of the pitt a lesson that you don't have to spend twenty million an episode to get a big commercially successful and acclaimed show? Bloys: I don't know if it's a lesson so much as it's the history of television, there is a reason why shows were designed this way. what we were hoping for and what the pitt delivered was more than six or eight weeks of episodes, 15 weeks of weekly engagement but also and probably most importantly in this environment setting up a show that is creatively capable of coming back within a year and with producers who are able to do that. that obviously used to be the norm ans as an industry we've gotten away from it as shows have gotten bigger and more complicated: special effects, shooting overseas and all of the things that make shows bigger and more cinematic but also more challenging to produce. the idea of getting back to the basics back to what television was the people who know how to do that, it's a skill and john and scott and noah know how to do that, john has made some of the best shows with the highest episode counts there are. so if you want to achieve those things you have to go to people who understand how to set it up and execute on that.
