The personal data of millions who use the largest online UK pharmacy are routinely sent to US & foreign data brokers, who publically declare themselves as profiting from such data. We told the UK companies responsible over 6 months ago, & then the ICO in April, & no action has been taken.

One of the data brokers we complained about admit to collecting gender identification and sexual orientation data. Potentially sensitive search query data are also passed on. In all cases users' refusal of consent is ignored.

The actual issue is where user consent is actioned I.e. enforced. Originally it had to be by site-administered JavaScript because DNT & its API were allowed to be ignored. The lobbyists called this the cookie banner approach which they undermined by emphasising performance over enforcement.

It’s clearly better that clients do the enforcement because efficacy can be checked more easily, but there needs to be sophisticated API support to communicate controller intent & purpose to the client. The outlines of this API must be defined robustly in law then passed to a standardising ..

Some of them know exact ages. So what if some don't, they can use a democratically managed credential management service We are where we are today because a generation so enthusiastically embraced Big Tech, oblivious to where that would lead. Government now has to act, & many support them in that.

Valerie O'Neill @minabird.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Who knows what data they hold or can link to, but that's not the point. Age credential data can be obtained in privacy protective ways, in a way properly administered probably by the public sector. The tech companies can & should implement on-device pattern recognition technology to act on it.

Another great essay from Doctorow, an absolute must-read:
Quote from the article: "This is why AI is so attractive to the ruling class. For corporate leaders, the fantasy of your own worth is always dangerously close to collapsing, due to the haunting knowledge that if you don't show up for work, everything continues as per normal; while if your workers don't show up for work, the shop closes down and stays closed. Bosses really want to be in the driver's seat, but ultimately they know that they're strapped into the back seat, playing with a Fisher Price steering wheel. AI is a way to wire that toy steering wheel directly into the drive-train: it's the fantasy that a boss can have an idea and the corporation will execute it, without any messy human needs or demands getting in the way"
