Measuring travel time and knowing the speed of sound in water, the echosounder provides depth measurements along swaths, which we combine to create bathymetric maps, revealing underwater landscapes, submarine volcanoes, and ridges.

This is why we turned on our multibeam sonar, which measures bathymetry at high resolution (~50 m/pixel) along the track of the ship, revealing spectacular highs and lows as we crossed the Southwest Indian Ridge a couple days ago.

This was a cool study and fun paper to write. We followed acoustically tagged lake around with a multibeam sonar to study their behaviour. Observed attacks on prey fish schools and interactions with other lake trout.

It's #sturgeonsaturday! Last week, I talked about seeing sturgeon with sound. But how do we know the species (green or white sturgeon)? We use video! We drop cameras in select areas and watch the fish swim by. Last year we saw 98 fish. Of ones we could identify all were green #sturgeon. 🧪🌎

Nov. gales can lift and move mats of decaying benthic #Cladophora in Lk Ontario. These algae events are a major safety concern at industrial cooling-water intake facilities where there is a risk of fouling. We are using multibeam #sonar to assess the effectiveness of Bubble Curtains as a deterrent.

Having a dabble mosaicking VHF down-scan imagery along some rough ground previously mapped with the Humminbird sidescan, and processed using PINGMapper. Doing so provides a fantastic transect overview, and clearly illustrates the ground and the value that kelp cover provides for detected fish.

How do we count sturgeon underwater? We use sound! Sturgeon are so big and usually close to the bottom that we can use habitat mapping sonar to count them. Each blob in the image on the right is a sturgeon. #sturgeonsaturday 🧪

All kinds of sounds are happening in the oceans. There are whale songs or echolocation. Cephalopods can make and hear sounds, too, even without ears, and then there’s human-made noise, like the giant shipping containers that crisscross the globe.

The ocean's volume is 1,335x10^6 km^3, and its surface area is 360x10^6 km^2. Its average depth exceeds 3 km. To follow up on my post from earlier and a conversation I had earlier this week... The scale of how much water is in the ocean is just hard to process, even for us working on it. 🌊
