Ocean surface temperatures hit a record high for June
European scientists warn of consequences for weather patterns, the global climate and marine life Temperatures on the ocean surface have hit a record high, raising fears of another burst of extreme heat this summer. On 21 June, temperatures outside the polar regions exceeded the extraordinary highs observed at the same time in 2023 and 2024, the Copernicus Climate Change Service said on Wednesday. This little Comma butterfly seems to have claimed our back garden in the last day or two, so much so that I've seen it chasing off a bumblebee that happened to be just calling in! 🦋

🌊🧪Accelerating deep-sea research through accessible technologies "rapid advances in low-cost, open-source hardware, software, and artificial intelligence present an immense opportunity to enable more scalable, inclusive research." www.cell.com/trends-open/...
Figure 2 Low-cost innovations already advancing deep-sea research.

Lower-cost alternatives to state-of-the-art deep-sea research tools are already under development and being deployed, expanding participation in deep-sea science and broadening deep-sea datasets. Examples include: (A) a 3D-printed deep-sea housing with an integrated epoxy-potted ‘DEEPi’ camera on the endcap [13]; (B) an ‘Azor drift-cam’ [11]; (C) a deep-sea BRUV system (photo courtesy of Kaitlin Noyes); (D) an open-source, deep-sea timed weight release system using an integrated 3D-printed housing for the battery and control electronics (Motsenbocker, B. et al., 2025, IEEE Oceans Brest, conference); (E) the ‘MARS’ programmable, multi-purpose automatic release system [15]; and (F) low-cost biotelemetry tags and receiver [16].

Lucky for me this brown crab didn't want to taste test the camera, as it later proceeded to hammer the bait cage and send it to dry dock for repairs! As the water off Bridlington is now clearing, brown and swimmer crabs, lobsters and assorted flatfish can be brought to the camera for better viewing.

My first BRUV drop of the 2026 season on a sandy patch inside Bridlington Bay NTZ. Though visibility is still quite poor, the dabs were seen to be aggressively chasing the crabs away from any potential lunch. #marinelife

Residents of an inshore Bridlington Bay shipwreck attend the BRUV for day 4 of #25DaysOfFishmas. A shoal of pouting investigate the bait cage, while tucked away in a triangular hole top left is a rarely filmed visitor in these waters - a shy conger eel awakes and surveys the melee outside! 🐟🧐🎅🦑

Just thought I'd catch up with the Blue Tit box this morning, as there's been quite a bit of nest building activity recently. I was surprised to see what might be a couple of eggs below feathers in the centre, and if so it would be about a week and a half earlier than last year. 🐣🐣
Camera view inside a box for Blue Tits, showing a bed of white feathers, and what could be two eggs in the very centre.

Conger eels are something of a rarity off East Yorkshire, with only a handful of official recordings between the Wash and Middlesbrough (about 200km of coastline). Luck would have it then, when one photo-bombed a BRUV recording over an inshore wreck earlier this year. 🦑🌍 #ukunderwater

Starting to push towards the limit of the Humminbird 1.1MHz down-scan over an inshore wreck here, as I'm flying the transducer at an altitude of up to 27 metres. However teaming the data with PINGMapper, it manages to illustrate a variety of shoaling fish over the area to full depth really well.
