Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each January to September period from 1900 through 2025. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

Descobreixen un sistema de falles incipient al Mar d’Alborán amb certs riscos sísmics amagats:

Un equip de l’Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) ha liderat un estudi pioner publicat a la revista Tectonics que identifica i descriu per primer cop amb gran detall un sistema de falles incipient al Mar d’Alborán, situat entre el sud de la península Ibèrica i el nord d’Àfrica. La troballa aporta noves claus per entendre com neixen i evolucionen les falles actives i té implicacions rellevants per a la comprensió dels riscos sísmics amagats en aquesta regió del Mediterrani occidental.

L’article, titulat “Characterizing an Incipient Fault System: Insights From the Morphometric Analysis of the North‐South Faults (Alboran Sea)”, analitza l’estructura i la morfologia d’un conjunt d’escarpaments submarins a uns 60 km al sud-oest d’Almeria i relacionats amb el sistema de falles Nord-Sud, un sistema en les primeres etapes del seu desenvolupament. A partir de dades batimètriques d’alta resolució adquirides amb un vehicle submarí autònom (AUV) i la seva anàlisi geomorfològica i estructural, l’equip ha pogut reconstruir les primeres fases del seu creixement, un procés que fins ara s’havia observat molt poques vegades en entorns marins ...

The way light reflects and refracts from water, esp. near the coast, has a lot to do with the sediment ( and other) particles suspended in them. What I didn't realize was that the waves can orient the particles, and thus how light behaves. 🧪🌊 Link: aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Un nou estudi alerta de les implicacions ecològiques de la nova onada d’industrialització que pateix la Costa Brava:

Un nou article científic liderat per l’Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) en col·laboració amb la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), el Centre d’Estudis Avançats de Blanes (CEAB-CSIC), la Universitat de Girona (UdG) i la Universitat de Barcelona (UB) alerta que la nova onada d’industrialització que pateix la Mediterrània occidental pot tenir “greus implicacions mediambientals i socioeconòmiques”. 

El treball, publicat recentment a la revista Scientific Reports, pren la Costa Brava com a cas d’estudi, integrant dades espacials i temporals que posen en evidència l’impacte de l’activitat de sectors tradicionals i emergents —com la pesca i l’aqüicultura, la nàutica recreativa, els creuers, el transport de mercaderies, l’eòlica marina, els gasoductes d’hidrogen o la dessalinització— i la seva interacció amb les Àrees Marines Protegides (AMP) de la Xarxa Natura 2000 i altres zones de gran valor per a la biodiversitat marina. 

Els resultats indiquen que el bon estat ambiental d’aquestes àrees podria veure’s afectat per pressions acumulatives que condueixen, entre altres impactes, a la pèrdua de biodiversitat, la degradació del fons marí, l’expansió d’espècies invasores o la contaminació ...
