Found an 1881 report of a fire here that destroyed the machinery helping me date the machinery we still have. There are still burn marks on some of the beams, though fires were common in mills. 130

Mill of Foresterhill @millofforesterhill.bsky.social · 01/10/2026The waterwheel in the National Museum of Scotland came from a limestone quarry, presumably to power a pump for keeping the workings dry. Coincidentally, we have a water-filled limestone quarry right next to our old mill… #LimestoneQuarry 030
Mill of Foresterhill @millofforesterhill.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Picked up this old waterwheel, complete with crank & connecting rod, at a second-hand yard recently. Very similar to this one in the National Museum in Edinburgh, where the same crank-connecting rod arrangement converts the wheel’s rotation into the reciprocating motion for a pump. #waterwheels 150

Mill of Foresterhill @millofforesterhill.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Strongly agree. Technology is never simply ’technical’. Technological systems are socially constructed with choices, and values. That’s why I agree humanities are essential alongside STEM. As an engineer, I used this work extensively during my own humanities studies. 010
