I've changed my mind about the new BNA newspaper archive system now I'm getting better search results. Found an 1881 report of a fire here that destroyed the machinery helping me date the machinery we still have. There are still burn marks on some of the beams, though fires were common in mills.

Picked up this old waterwheel, complete with crank & connecting rod, at a second-hand yard recently. Very similar to this one in the National Museum in Edinburgh, where the same crank-connecting rod arrangement converts the wheel’s rotation into the reciprocating motion for a pump. #waterwheels

Happy birthday to Robert Fergusson, born #OTD in 1750. A fearless satirist and poetic innovator in Scots language and tradition, he is one of the most erudite and influential Scottish writers. Watch this space for my new edition of his works, out with Edinburgh University Press in February!

It feels strange to say that I’ve submitted the Collected Works of Robert Fergusson to @edinburghup.bsky.social… feeling equally relieved and bereft! But delighted that the edition is on its way in early 2027. Thanks to @wilcocksonamy.bsky.social for being a brilliant RA and all who supported ❤️

My tenuous link to John Maclean: his daughter married Ellice Milton, the brother of my stepmother’s mother, Meg Milton. Meg told me how, at the start of the war, she brought her friend and workmate Nan home to meet the family in Elgin.

Visiting the NLS archives in Edinburgh today, having travelled from Oldmeldrum to consult an item only to discover that the “item” is actually just a listing of the manuscripts. And where are the manuscripts themselves held? Oldmeldrum. 🤦‍♂️

Serendipitous find of the day! A 3 ft waterwheel, almost exactly a quarter-scale replica of my own 12 ft mill wheel. Too good to leave behind. Next project, refurbishing it and installing it in the burn alongside the old mill stream. Watch this space… #waterwheels

Trying to decipher a profession in 1864 Scottish death register. Col 2, row 3 reads “_____ carpenter”. The same word appears in column 6 for his father’s occupation. I know from other sources he was a millwright, but it doesn’t clearly look like millwright. Any palaeography experts have suggestions?

So, I noticed a new evolution in the way comics are displayed in book stores today. I found a shop that placed comics in the comics section, but also on a single shelf at the end of each genre section. So if you are browsing fantasy, the books beyond Z are all fantasy comics.

So I think I need to do a sober thread on just how disasterously bad the new trove.scot website is, in comparison to the sites - especially Canmore - that it's replacing. tl:dr - the new site is not fit for purpose; switching off the old sites on 24 June 2025 is way way way premature.

Looking forward to seeing Aberdeen friends next week to talk about editing the works of Robert Fergusson. Did you know... Fergusson is most often associated with Edinburgh - his beloved 'Auld Reikie' - but his family originated in Aberdeenshire. Will be good to be in the Fergusson homeland!
Portrait of poet Robert Fergusson (1750-74) by Alexander Runciman. The background is very dark. Fergusson's face is pale, his eyes large, brown and piercing and his expression serious; he looks towards his right. He has brown curls above his half-visible left ear.
