Am I missing something or is this far more existentially threatening than AI?

If we apply a consent regime (not a property regime) to privacy rights, then the entire commercial surveillance industry would cease to exist.

And made up on the two issues that many Democrats could have done much more about (reproductive and trans rights). Some blue legislatures have indeed codified reproductive rights, but much it has been by voters, including Republicans. Trump himself admits the Republican view here is unpopular.

I guess I'm more than a little tired of hearing about why one thing or another won't work, as we confront a swelling existential emergency. Unless you have the magic solution, how about we just shut up and let them try it.

I'm baffled by this too. Is she assuming that AI is going to transform society so thoroughly in ten years that marriage will be unrecognizable? Ten years ago I thought something similar of self-driving cars, but here we are.

It doesn't make it more ethical, but since the merchants pay the card companies through a percentage of their sales, *they* are the customers. And that makes us, the cardholders, their product. They don't care about being fair to you any more than Land o' Lakes cares about being fair to a cow.

"... birds living in cages tend to be more efficient." What a multitude of evils are glossed over by that one word: efficient. The wrong conclusion is being implied in this article. It's not one or the other, it's neither. Why choose the lesser of two evils when you can choose none at all?

That would make as much sense as demanding the fox stay out of the hen house. It's up to you to put up a strong fence. Foxes can't be hectored or shamed.

@johnquiggin.bsky.social on how the EU can thrive in the absence of, and despite, the US. Not easy, but a better future than the US has, even in its best case scenario. open.substack.com/pub/johnquig...
Europeans and their allies are in an unenviable position. But still better than that of Americans for whom precarious and unequally distributed material prosperity has come at the price of freedom.

Here's a sentence that stopped me in my tracks last week: "The statement that 'the cemeteries are full of indispensable people' is just as true of nations, and in particular the US": crookedtimber.org/2026/07/16/5... 1/
A vintage world map. The US has been obscured by a roiling black cloud from which squirm many questing tentacles. A large area around the US has been discolored.

It shouldn't trouble you if you see a diversity of opinion in the media, even (and especially) from one outlet. It's a sign of a free press.

It's a party that supports a good cause. The people who attend are not like you and me. Maybe we let them party the way they want, and you party (and give to charities) the way you want. It's only grotesque if you press your nose up against the glass. Don't pay any attention and it's not grotesque.

Middle: Moe, labelled USA, wipes his hands after a job well done.

Bottom: Moe (labelled USA) stares out, hands on hips. Behind him, appears Barney (labelled "Ayatollah Khameni").

I'm not sure I understand what this would accomplish. Americans are already less likely than the citizens of other developed countries to have a passport. But I would assume the ones that do would be disproportionately coastal, i.e. more likely to be Democrats. What am I missing?

Those "congressional invertebrates" who are not actually criminally benefiting from the situation are oblivious behind the one-way mirror that most Americans are happy to live within. They think nothing outside the country can affect them. Maybe there was once some truth to that.

American exceptionalism is not an excuse. It's not even a real thing, except superficially. I'm so tired of Americans smugly declaring they're different from everybody else. The United States needs to learn from other countries.

I love this so much. To anyone who says what's the point of the arts (or public funding): art digests thought and feeling, feeding it back and allowing us to see from new angles, enriching our own experience of the world and every now and then that fresh perspective will trigger a precious insight.

Informing the public is not bullying, although the less tactful may come across as shaming - but vegan advocates face strong headwinds of sneers, ridicule, and endlessly repeated bogus arguments in support of the carnivores. Truly, they're the ones being bullied. 2/2

Interesting choice of words. I don't know how you would "bully" anyone into changing their diet. But you acknowledge that there are many good, objective reasons to go vegan if it can be accomplished in significant numbers. 1/2
