We lost the technology to build glorious massive red power switches like the old IBM PS/2

Book cover for "The Eyes of the Killer Robot" by John Bellaris. The white-haired professor, his plucky kid companion Johnny Dixon in a yellow jacket, and a third man in brown, look across a darkened room at the disassembled parts of a robot dressed in the grey uniform of an old-timey baseball player. The head is on a shelf, the other body parts lean against the wall.

Did you see the ProPublica report about how this one company Bowlero is acquiring most of the lanes in the US, jacking up prices, adding giant video screens with shows & ads, pushing out leagues, and sometimes replacing pinsetters with a system where every pin has a string on top instead?

He says we've been "telexing" people, which predates the VP's lifetime
Screenshot of the opening paragraph of the wikipedia article on telex, including a photo of an antiquated olive-and-beige teletype machine: "Telex is a telecommunication system that allows text-based messages to be sent and received by teleprinter over telephone lines. The term "telex" may refer to the service, the network, the devices, or a message sent using these.[1] Telex emerged in Germany in the 1930s and became a major method of sending text messages electronically between businesses in the post–World War II period. Its usage declined as the fax machine grew in popularity in the 1980s."

CDC revised their COVID levels again, mid-surge, without disclosure or warning. Consider the CDC's maps and threat assessments unreliable, but their published data is still correct and reported correctly by sites like pmc19.com. (screenshots from pmc19.com/bluewashing.mp4)
Graph showing CDC revisions to COVID classification levels based on wastewater values. The latest rewrite on August 14th nearly shifted the entire scale by a level. What used to be "Very High" is now "High", what used to be "High" is now "Moderate", what used to be "Moderate" is now "Low", and half of what used to be "Low" is now "Very Low".Side-by-side CDC US map coloration before and after the category shift. 2 states are no longer red, 5 states are no longer orange. This makes hte country look like the surge isn't happening.PMC COVID-19 dashboard map of the United States, colored using the CDC level palette before the revision. Lots of red throughout the entire southeastern US, plus California, half of Nevada, most of Montana, most of Washington, most of Arizona, and mostly red in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands.

Check out the roots of the thread. Whether a layered system functions is orthogonal to whether the video accurately describes an LLM. You can use all sorts of software tricks to edit/compose that context, but it must always be reduced to context in, tokens out, at the LLM interface boundary.
Quote from upthread saying "Sure but the video is false."

Y'know how the guy in "Memento" reads all his tattoos every morning to figure out who he is and what he's doing? That's how LLMs work. The context is the tattoos. The model is stateless. If you send altered context, the model will autocomplete from the alterations. The presenter explains this.

Comparing base models, the Ford is $3400 more than the Slate, and comes with a touchscreen. Slate's *lack* of a touchscreen would be worth paying $3400 *extra*.

The idea of LLM providers throwing a fit about somebody making derivatives of their shit, calling it IP theft, is deeply funny given that's what they're doing to millions of content creators.

It’s a baffling new trend that highlights how pervasive AI and surveillance have become"

This is great, though I'm not crazy about the recommendations against disputing mandates and other nonsense in public. Though I can imagine how you'd arrive at "just keep your head down and look for a new job" as a consultant seeing maximum delusion with minimum power. Quoted bit feels right.
Quote from the post's section for people just trying to survive: "If you’re being asked to review huge volumes of terrible AI code, just assume that the organisation is going to burn you out and fire you. You will not convince the person drowning you in 2000 line PRs to stop. Start looking for a new job as if you have already been fired. I have seen this happen many times now, and it always plays out the same way – do the job search while you have energy. Don’t worry if your speed drops or management gets annoyed at you. There is no way to avoid that, you can simply choose whether it happens now because of your job search, or later because you are too depressed to work anymore."

Lia writes about how, when GenAI gains a toehold anywhere, it's the narrow end of a wedge that drives greater use, acceptance, and normalization. This is why LLM companies push their shit so hard, this is why your poisoned C-suite is teling, not asking, workers to use it. Great post.
Screenshot of paragraphs from the link in the quoted post:

Every self-respecting software engineer knows that writing code is easier than reviewing or auditing existing code. That's one reason why getting a professional audit done is so bloody expensive. But somehow, "generated code is fine, you just need to review it carefully" is painted as time-saving. Wat?

Every self-respecting software engineer knows that deleting code is better than adding code. But somehow, "I can write more code faster with this" is a perk now. The fuck?

Every self-respecting software engineer resents iterations times that aren't instant and dreads systems that only offer indirect control. But apparently guiding an unreliable chatbot via responses counted in seconds is a good workflow. What's wrong with you?Screenshot of more paragraphs from Lia's post:

Despite all that, though, it's working. Stuff I'm not allowed to talk about. A blog post that ends with "and this was faster thanks to AI". A reference article that used LLMs to summarize GPU specs (and trusted them to respect NDAs? My dude). "Careful experiments" and "just to generate tests" and "only for checking the boring parts of a code review".

That's all the narrow end of the wedge. Using it for busywork is still using it. It means you've got the subscription active, that you've done the setup, that you have now learned the vocabulary as a user rather than a critic. You are not immune to propaganda. You've given it a finger. What makes you believe it will not take the arm?

We all grew up believing one prickish guy from the EPA could come in and throw a giant switch in the company's basement for not complying with environmental regulations, damn the consequences. Why isn't that guy shutting down data centers?
Movie still from Ghostbusters. In the firehouse basement, the EPA suit is pointing a finger at a professorial Egon, telling him the containment grid must be shut down. Fuck @nianticspatial.bsky.social for doing business with military industry, trading player-collected data.
Screenshot from the article: "Iris Muis, a data-ethics expert at Utrecht University’s Data School, framed the trap plainly: a user cannot picture how their data might be used later. Maybe in five years there is an application with effects you fundamentally disagree with. British game designer Adrian Hon has gone further, advising Pokémon Go players to stop making scans and consider smaller games less likely to resell data. De Hingh, who quit the game over a year ago because he was tired of the updates rather than the data terms, called the news an enormous eye-opener. “A game should stay a game,” he said."

Daily posts: look what I built, here’s how many agents I used, here’s how many skills I shipped. Pull in teammates. Pull in strangers. Ask for feedback. “Humbly.”

This sounds like a retread of the old finger-wag about how millionaires would leave, when the opposite has happened under Massachusetts's $1M+ income tax just 2 states north of NY. www.nbcboston.com/news/politic...
Screenshot of a paragraph from the linked article, which quotes the report at the heart of the article: "Research has demonstrated that million-dollar earners and high net worth individuals tend to exhibit lower rates of migration compared to the general public," said lead report author Omar Ocampo, researcher at the Institute for Policy Studies. "This is not a surprise. Their family, business and social network deeply root them to amenity rich locales where they enjoy a high quality of life. A modest increase on their incomes does not compel the overwhelming majority of millionaires to flee to other states."
