For those who can't get to Santa Monica tomorrow, do you have any version of this available online or written (on the general theme of cooperation is computation)? I'd love to see it

1/ People who feel optimistic about AI tend to agree with one another. But people who worry about AI? Not so much. A belief-network analysis of six questions about AI and technology reveals a striking asymmetry. 🧵

4/ What does this have to do with social psychology? Society is a compressible information system: it gets regularities that can be collapsed & stigmergy is a fundamental mechanism for this collective social information processing.

Mike Quayle @mikeq.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
3/ This simple mechanism couples multiple agents into computation systems that process and consolidate social information. With enough participants, (if the glue works & the paper doen’t rip) my poster will (hopefully) become an evolving map of the conference identity system.

Mike Quayle @mikeq.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
2/ Each person writes social information into the shared environment via traces. Traces become the basis for future action. This is STIGMERGY: indirect coordination via action-trace feedback.

1/ At #EASP2026? Help demonstrate STIGMERGY by playing the INTERACTIVE GAME on my poster tomorrow Thur 2 July @ 10:50am (Poster 51) Choose a little homemade boat, help label it, and move the boats around. If it works, and if enough people pass by, this will become a stigmergic system. How?

The better news is that a decent fraction of the social psychology community said "enough!" in the 70s and revolted. Rejected experimentation & moved over to (various) qualitative methods. Some dodgy, others now mature and productive (eg Discursive Psychology, Conversation Analysis).

That means putting the right supports in place now: charging infrastructure for heavy trucks, depot grid connections, purchase grants or leasing support. The government has very little control over the price of oil, but it can control over how dependent we remain on it.

European power prices are split since the US-Iran conflict. Gas-reliant markets like Italy and Ireland have seen high prices (€140/MWh) while renewable rich regions including Spain, Portugal and Sweden see far lower prices (€40/MWh). These are average wholesale daily prices (8am to 8pm).

Earlier this month, output from solar farms started exceeding 1GW for the first time. Yesterday, we saw another important record set: around 1pm, solar output was equal to almost a quarter of the island's electricity demand. ☀️ 🔋
A stacked area chart of the renewable electricity generation mix on the island of Ireland with the following fuel types: battery, biomass, waste-to-energy, hydro, solar, wind, oil, and gas. The y axis indicates the percentage of demand being met by each source.

Footnote reads: All-island figures. Excludes rooftop solar. Source: EirGrid, SEMOA treemap of the electricity mix on the island of Ireland with the following fuel types: battery, biomass, hydro, solar, wind, oil, gas, and waste-to-energy. Larger sources are annotated with the GWh and percentage of total generation that source comprised.

Let's see why clean energy technologies are so much more energy secure than oil. A single solar panel (450W) costs about €100, same as a tank of petrol. How many EV kilometres can the solar panel power compared to the tank of diesel? Take a guess while I work it out on the back of an envelope.

In my @irishtimes.com op-ed today I argue that our climate law is the best framework we have for making energy secure and affordable, because it tackles the root cause of our vulnerability to energy shocks - our dependence on fossil fuels. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026...
