there’s some twisted irony in the idea that Watchmen posits nostalgia as something people retreat to in periods of instability, “In an era of stress and anxiety, when the present seems unstable and the future unlikely”, and yet so much of Watchmen’s power today relies on nostalgia.

Pen drawing set under a sky of electric blue and plasma pink and silver stars is a large wave like structure made up of cloud like swirls. The wave crests up to the top of the page and curls into a thick base that has a humanoid figure with an outstretched hand that seems to be guiding the curl that ends in a bird-of-prey like face with a hooked beak. Flowing across the body of the page is a swirling mass of these clouds in black and white that curl upward on the other side into sharply rising waves that are off in the distance with several smaller wavelets trying to fall back to the low point between the bigger wave with the figure and the steep wave on the other side.
Pen drawing of a face on the left side of the page, with eyes closed and long hair, the black of space filled with ghostly white symbols and patterns that flow outward to the right. Tucked into the being's left shoulder is a striped, very fluffy, furry creature with rabbit like ears, black eyes and a snout more like a cat. These shapes flow towards a skull with tendrils similar to the being's hair, full of stars on inky blackness. In the distance other creatures resembling octopus, but with a skull for a head that the tentacles. In the background is a webbing of biomechanical shapes while additional examples of the furry creature flow up and around the right side of the page as if watching or guarding the scene between the large skull and the being.
Pen drawing centered on a face, eyes closed and face pointed down. The face is covered with tree light tattoos rising from the eyes with half-moon and circular symbols down the forehead. There is script flowing from below each eye and down the cheeks either side of black lips. A richly embossed collar is around their neck and the rest of their body is covered by metal discs and chains with various amulets covered in symbols or sculpted with eyes. Their hands are withered with the right one is tight to their chest while the other is raised and in a faint wispy white nimbus. Flanking this large figure are a set of smaller ones in high, richly embossed head-gear reading from large tomes that are on stands that appear to be made of a set of screaming faces. Rising up from behind the figures are columns with a stained glass appearing webbing between them while behind the main figure are a series of branching like structures.
Pen drawing of a large, multi-limbed female figure with the two of the larger limbs outstretched to the side and surrounded by globes of blue light while their main hands are positioned in front of them as if manipulating something invisible to the viewer. Sigils flow down their chest from their neck while their face is just an oval shaped void in their head while the hair is black like space and decorated with white gems to resemble stars. Their other arms diminish in side with the smallest of the four pairs only having two fingers and a thumb. They are standing over an eye like structure with a rippling, black fluid surface and white light shining out of an opening resembling an iris. Around them are metallic symbols made up lines of various thicknesses and circles while there are rips in the world with black void. Behind the figure is an electric blue sky that appears to be dripping while the surrounding walls are richly textured with more of the symbols like on the spheres, lit from within with a pale glow.

Thinking of the Cornell gang rape case and how every system seems built to allow men to abuse women without concern. You can face more punishment for holding a “Stop Genocide” sign than being a rapist because the future of a rapist is the foundation to the structure of this fucked up system.

A friend told me that the only thing that the rich care to hold on to other than their money is their power over women That’s why “me too” and Epstein scares them so much, and it’s why they developed the ability to control women’s bodies with AI Can’t seduce them? Can’t rape them? Ruin their lives

So, to me, Sam Keith is a hero, and a visionary, and if it were up to me the Maxx would sit by Bone and Watchmen and Maus and Persepolis in the Library of Congress for all time, a testament to one of the most remarkable artists of our time. And luckily, he decided to make comics.

MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
To the world which few have, despite the sales figures or deadlines. His work was messy, dirty and difficult, but his drive and passion was so clear. The most clear, the most pure an artist can be, and that’s to follow your heart and tell stories you care about no matter what.

MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Something that could be easily defined or described. Every creative in the industry knows the pain of a great idea that someone says “I don’t know how to sell this.” But Sam Kieth kept making comics, and Sam Kieth kept making them his way. He had been given a gift and offered it, and himself

MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And maybe someone has come up with an objective answer. But I can’t be objective about Sam Keith. He’s a person I never got to meet, but is imprinted on me. He’s part of my artistic DNA, and more importantly, who I am as a person. For here was a creator who did what they wanted to do and it wasn’t
160
MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
High and an acclaimed MTV series coming out, maybe the delays kept those fellow early enthusiasts from finishing the story with him. Or maybe, that word came back, “weird.” I honestly don’t know. People who are comic journalists have probably written about this and looked at sales and reviews
160
MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
So it wasn’t just me. I even felt a few who, like me, looked past his “artists’ artist” reputation and felt the same about his stories. Grounded, yet fantastical, beautiful, yet so full of horror and pain. It certainly wasn’t me. It was that, I suppose, despite the sales at one point being
260
MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I went back to school and found my contemporaries felt the same about Keith- a monster, a force of nature, some kind of elemental who was forced to live as a human and the only was to feel his lost power was to put pencil and pen and watercolor to paper and the power poured out, freeing his spirit.
150
MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Confused at the fact that the Maxx wasn’t also spoken about in those conversations. Then I found out Keith was still making comics! And he made a ton of creator owned series, and issue after issue would appear in the quarter box of my LCS slowly but surely. And some never got a TPB.
150
MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
For a bit and slowly started back up around the turn of the millennium. And the Maxx was finished! And sometime in the 00s, they packed them in trades and I was an adult now, and I was so excited to read it. When everyone was touting Bone collections and selling Maus at the bookstore, I was honestly

MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I could handle Cameron, Verhooven and Chronenberg but this was something else. The characters touched me in a way no other work of fiction had, let alone a comic. I stopped reading. Keith kept working at it, taking years to finish. I moved on in the late 90s to manga, then stopped reading comics
160
MORROCCO @mikemorrocco.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And friendship, and heartache and pain- one of the human experience- made me flee. Unlike a 2 hour rated R movie I was too young to watch, the Maxx wasn’t over when you stopped watching it. The next issue was coming. I couldn’t handle it, I wasn’t mature enough,

And sexual violence. Bam. Smack. Kapow. But not in an Adam West Batman way, more in a “my soul hurts” way. Like a “that made my jaw hit the floor” way. In a “you tugged too hard on my heartstrings and now my heart has been ripped out” kind of a way. And the story, one of redemption and love
