This morning, index.hr published an article citing Dr David Betz of King's College London predicting civil war in Britain. Within minutes, a friend in Croatia was asking me if they should be worried. Perhaps worth reflecting on responsible use of academic credentials.

It makes me wonder if we are expecting too much from individual self-control and habit management, and not asking enough about how the broader ecosystem of devices and services could be reshaped. (6/6)

The same applies to social media. Much of the experience, like algorithmic feeds and endless free entertainment would arguably would not be missed. Anecdotally, people I’ve talked to usually say they wish they could step away from social media entirely. (4/6)

The hardware reflects the same logic. The large screen is not necessarily the natural end point of usability. The essentials (calls, navigation, music) are already handled well by smartwatches and simpler devices. (3/6)

We all know the usual advice about greyscale, disabling notifications and digital decluttering, yet it is hardly surprising that users lose this battle when the system is designed in large part specifically to capture attention for advertising purposes. (2/6)

If you don’t yet exercise, strongly consider starting regular indoor rowing. It’s not fun, but: 1. It’s a full body workout, muscle and cardio 2. It can be done in about 20 min/day 3. It’s not so hard to fit a C2 erg in many homes 4. It’s low impact and your chance of injury is low

Could it be CHFPD, with the F/E being an OCR error? CHFPD (CH FPD) could be referring to the Swiss Federal Political Department. This agency was formed in 1848 to deal with foreign policy, and was renamed in 1979 to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).

After 9/11, the FBI had only 8 Arabic speakers, one in NYC—Ali Soufan, who might’ve prevented the attacks if the CIA had shared intel. Lack of diversity left the CIA unable to place Bin Laden’s messaging and motives within a cultural context. Plenty of good literature on diversity in intelligence.

Since you mentioned “weird” and “Petraeus,” here’s a good one: In Bosnia, he loved tagging along for Delta Force night raids hunting Karadžić, riding in blacked-out vans wearing civvies. Delta once set up an ambush with a man in a gorilla suit on the highway, hoping it would dumbfound his driver.

Left column, labelled 'HARD', has an excerpt from John Milton's Paradise Lost: "Into this wild Abyss
—The womb of Nature and perhaps her grave,
Of neither sea, nor shore, nor air, nor fire,
But all these in their pregnant causes mixed
Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight,
Unless the almighty Maker them ordain
His dark materials to create more worlds—
Into this wild Abyss the wary Fiend
Stood on the brink of Hell and looked awhile,
Pondering his voyage; for no narrow frith
He had to cross."

Right column, labelled 'EASY', just says: "Devil's on the edge of Hell, looking at it. It's awful. He's like, 'Bloody hell.'"

An interesting read on the decline of shared media and Hollywood, and the shift toward decentralised, niche-driven cultural ecosystems. I remember trying to articulate this when we moved from three main TV channels to everyone doing their own thing online—this piece captures those feelings well.
