The ultimate test of naval power is the ability of cargo ships to move across the sea, not the number of weapons fired at an enemy.

This morning, index.hr published an article citing Dr David Betz of King's College London predicting civil war in Britain. Within minutes, a friend in Croatia was asking me if they should be worried. Perhaps worth reflecting on responsible use of academic credentials.

Another great listen from the @kingscollegelondon.bsky.social #AKC series. Another point it got me thinking about, and one I feel is generally underplayed is the question of responsible tech design. 🧵 (1/6) open.spotify.com/episode/73rA...

British Rowing cleared to redevelop Sherriff’s Boathouse and add a new one at Redgrave Pinsent Lake in Caversham, despite council objections over increased road traffic. Facilities for world-class rowers to be modernised. Will be great to see it in action.

If you don’t yet exercise, strongly consider starting regular indoor rowing. It’s not fun, but: 1. It’s a full body workout, muscle and cardio 2. It can be done in about 20 min/day 3. It’s not so hard to fit a C2 erg in many homes 4. It’s low impact and your chance of injury is low

After 9/11, the FBI had only 8 Arabic speakers, one in NYC—Ali Soufan, who might’ve prevented the attacks if the CIA had shared intel. Lack of diversity left the CIA unable to place Bin Laden’s messaging and motives within a cultural context. Plenty of good literature on diversity in intelligence.

An interesting read on the decline of shared media and Hollywood, and the shift toward decentralised, niche-driven cultural ecosystems. I remember trying to articulate this when we moved from three main TV channels to everyone doing their own thing online—this piece captures those feelings well.

The joke in domestic circles was that the Zagreb Xmas market could only win awards under the late mayor Bandić, as keeping things "in the family" made coordination easier. Until 2021, there were no public tenders for stalls, and selection criteria were secret. Curious how Zagreb would compete now.
