If you don’t like being called a racist, maybe don’t make a career of saying things that appeal to racists, don’t create a political party that keeps attracting racist candidates, don’t fawn over racist world leaders, and don’t make a convicted racist the guest of honour at your party conference.

I think they're banking on inequality rising faster than sea levels... Or to mix metaphors from the lockdowns "we're all in the same storm, we're not all in the same boat" We cannot trust oil executives to do the right thing.
First panel: A cartoon of a wealthy man and woman on a penthouse balcony. She says " the world economic Forum has identified inequality and climate change as the two biggest global risks."

Second panel: it zooms out to show their apartment tower is being eroded by sea level, with cranes building new layers on top. He says "as long as the inequality rises faster than the oceans we should be ok"

The homes that developers are building are out of reach of those that need them. We the homes that those impacted by the housing crisis need. We pay for it with a wealth tax on the super-rich. Many of them have contributed to and profited from this crisis. greenparty.org.uk/about/our-ma...

Build more homes? Land is inelastic, meaning you can't easily make more because the value went up (reclaiming land from the sea is finite and unsustainable) Demand isn't just for people to live in them. They are also investment vehicles for the wealthy www.economist.com/britain/2024...

Would building 1.5m homes bring down British house prices?
Answer: Not by much

Cllr Max McLoughlin @midlandmax.bsky.social · 04/09/2025
House prices quadrupled whilst earnings only doubled. Developers will say that it is because of planning laws. Economists will tell you that land prices are more likely responsible (seeing as they have increased at an almost identical rate to house prices).

Cllr Max McLoughlin @midlandmax.bsky.social · 04/09/2025
It's very easy to scapegoat a small minority to present an easy solution to a complex problem. But it's also very easy to debunk the nonsense. Housing affordability has worsened for decades. The slight reduction since the pandemic still sees house prices over 7x higher than earnings.

What's causing the housing crisis in the UK? 🚤 Reform think it's the 40k people that arrived by irregular means. 🏡 Over 300k households presented as homeless in each of the last 2 years. 🏚️There are 1.5 million vacant or unoccupied dwellings in the UK. 💰190k properties in the UK are foreign owned

Been a very tiring and depressing week at Solihull Council. The psychodrama of the Conservative group has done serious harm to the reputation of the authority. There are laws and guidance on how things operate FOR GOOD REASON! It’s to protect the effective functioning of local government.

A very controversial meeting of Council this evening. An unprecedented 6 motions being considered. 3 of them relate to a lack of democratic norms on the Council, proposed by the Green Group, Lib Dems, and Independents. A Conservative motion attempts to remove independent chairs of scrutiny!

❗️ Cutting disability support won’t help people back into work. And it won’t help people who are already working. Shockingly, cuts could drive 3.2 MILLION people deeper into hardship.
Screenshot of an article in The Guardian that reads: Our £5bn disability benefits cuts will stop welfare state collapsing, says Kendall. Red lines are on top of the text to cross bits out and the amends now read: Our £7bn disability benefits cut will drive 3.2m into deeper hardship.

7. Democratic bodies should represent the people they serve. Positions should not be gifted on loyalty individuals. Whether you call it nepotism or cronyism, it is never a hallmark of good governance. As Valluvar describes this, it will lead you to "endless follies". No doubt, more to follow END

6. It is a longstanding issue with the controlling group, acting as an outlier in the West Midlands. There has been an attitude that 54% of Councillors should decide 100% of the positions. If they were selecting for competence and experience I would keep quiet, but it is evidently not the case.

5. When I pointed out that a further Conservative appointment was not only unsuitable, but represented a serious reputational risk to the Council and the outside organisation I was asked if I was making a threat. I explained that I was not and why it was unreasonable to put them forward.

4. They argued that it wasn't fair for the dignitaries to watch the votes. Both myself and Cllr Adeyemo said that it was a democratic process. He added that the administration have criticised opposition members for not putting themselves forward for outside bodies.

3. They smiled and shook their head. I said that if the meeting was not taking place in good faith then it was of no value for them to be present and that I and the Lib Dem Group Leader would rationalise our lists. It was a further 15 minutes before they left the meeting.

If it took this article to shock anyone’s support for Reform then they either weren’t paying attention, or it was never about making things better. Reform sells a poison that the buyer hopes will be taken by their enemies. Labour are harming themselves and the country by using it in government.

When you see groups labelled, or coded-language being used, call it out. Hear people talk about the Birmingham bin strike. The use of “certain areas” that have been worst hit isn’t harmless. If you live here, you know those areas, and who lives there. Discrimination grows like rubbish heaps.

I knew this when I went to university. In seminars there were others who assumed my accent indicated lower intelligence. I played with it so those who did prejudge could see what they were doing. But this isn’t a game. I’m not discriminated against in the way others are.
