big solitary cumulonimbus dropping in like a mothership. the scale of this is hard to grasp. that low ridge over there is actually some of the highest peaks in colorado, 8000 ft or more higher than this viewpoint. that storm is MILES tall.
photo of a massive cumulonimbus cloud in the distance. in the foreground the dark silhouette of some city buildings and a few lights can be seen. the cloud is dropping rain over the mountains in the distance. it's dark grey but lit up vivid salmon on its western edge by the setting sun. the sky is otherwise mostly clear aside from a few ragged clouds, steel blue up high, but ominous red down at the horizon.

i don't really watch anime anymore, but i spent the summer of '98 working in a gas station and instead of buying something cool like a car or a stereo, i blew every penny i earned buying anime on VHS! i still have most of these in a box in the closet...
a 3x3 grid of anime images from a website that has you pick "the 9 anime that shaped who i am" which is putting it more than a bit strongly, but anyway, the titles are: neon genesis evangelion (original series), serial experiments lain, bubblegum crisis, slayers next, the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya, ghost in the shell (the 1995 movie), iria: zeiram the animation, cowboy bebop, nausicaa of the valley of the wind

landscape photo looking northwest from a high vantage point. in the foreground but still pretty distant are the just the tops of some tall city buildings. i wouldn't call them skyscrapers because let's be honest it's denver, but they're that same blocky shape. it's dusk so they're starting to light up. behind that in the middle distance is a stretch of rolling trees and plains leading up to a line of huge, jagged mountains, stretching back to the horizon sort of in rows with each successive row higher and farther and fainter. the sky above has bands of clouds alternating with white and gold sunlight blasting through, until it's all grey cloud across the top. everything but the buildings in front is washed in a kind of golden haze unless uploading it to bluesky turns it into a blotchy, pixelated mess.

landscape photo. some distant buildings can be seen in silhouette at the very bottom, but it's mostly a picture of clouds and sky. the sky is more clear to the left, faded grey blue up top turning a little pinkinsh towards the horizon, but dark clouds are reaching in with like jagged fingers from the right. the right side of the frame is almost all grey black cloud. this is looking north, and the low sun in the west has lit the clouds orange around their edges.

photo of sunset over the mountains, but it really just looks like an almost abstract painting of cloud bands in orange, salmon, and pink, fading to grey at the bottom of the frame. it's super hazy due to (i think) wildfires in the northwest, but if you squint and if bluesky doesn't wreck the colors like usual you can just make out the silhouette of the mountains down at the bottom.

photo of the northern front range of the rocky mountains at sunset. not sure what peaks these are, it was taken from denver, but they're pretty far north, way north and west of boulder at least. the mountains are just dark silhouettes, they could be big stormy ocean waves. the sky is dark red down by the mountains, then a band of grey clouds crosses all across the frame, then at the very top the clouds break a bit and the sky is just a touch golden.

closeup photo of a bee working on the last few tiny purple flowers on top of a big globe thistle bloom. it's a sunny day and the sky is clear blue behind it. in the background out of focus a messy garden can be seen, and a low wooden fence and some sheds behind that, and finally a couple of tall green trees rising up on either side of the frame.

gary lee's
nightime photo of a graffiti-covered wall along an alley in the city, shot at an angle so you can see down the length of it a ways. it's a one-storey wall lit by three security lights along the top edge and the sky above is black. it's covered with a mural that says "gary lee's" in big curvy letters and then "motor club & grub" in small straight letters. the mural has a lot of graffiti on it, and in spite of the dark you can make out a whole rainbow of bright colors all across the wall. in the upper left there's a heavily tagged glass brick window in the wall, and the right edge of the frame ends with a utility pole disappearing as it rises into the dark above. there are some leafy green weeds and tall scraggly grasses popping up through cracks in the pavement and intruding into the lower left and right corners of the picture.

i made some unplanned carnitas last night, so breakfast this morning was carnitas & eggs tostadas. i thought it looked cool! it was tasty, but to be honest a bit dry. i should've done the salsa in the food processor instead of chopping it but i don't always make the best choices before coffee.
photo of a plate of tostadas next to a mason jar of iced coffee, sitting on a wooden countertop. the tostadas are two small corn tortillas fried light brown, topped with shredded pork that's a bit charred around the edges, topped with fried eggs you can't quite see, topped with red and green roughly-chopped tomato salsa, all with a bit of crumbled white cotija cheese sprinkled over it. the coffee is topped with cinnamon-flecked foam from being shaken up with ice in the jar.

photo looking down a brightly lit industrial alley in the middle of the night. the buildings on either side are white, their windows are black, the lights running down the alley are white, the concrete paving is white, everything fades to black where the lights don't reach. there's a line of utility poles running closely-spaced down the middle, power lines strung overhead. overall it looks like a high-contrast greyscale photo, but it's actually full color, that's just what this weird alley looks like.

pensacola beach, fl, 1/2026 the only person i saw in the water all week
photo looking out at the ocean from the beach. it's a grey, cold, stormy day, the waves are high and the blue-green water is choppy. in the lower left a man in a black wetsuit can be seen rising up out of the surf. he's a kite surfer, being pulled by the white, crescent-shaped kite seen in the upper right.

don't wanna flood people's feeds:
screenshot of the following text:
i'd never been to pensacola before, but i was stuck there alone for a week in january.

pensacola itself is trumpy as hell, like i guess you'd expect from north florida. remember how you forgot trump renamed the gulf of mexico? they didn't forget in pensacola, they've posted star-spangled, red white & blue-striped signs proudly pointing the way to the "gulf of america" on every corner.

but the island of pensacola beach was surreal, disorienting. i got a cheap deal on a hotel room with an ocean view, because it was a dead empty ghost town in midwinter, with an icy wind howling off the gulf. wherever i went, i was the only one there.

everything around me screamed that i was in a beach party town, except all the people were missing. all silent, nothing moving. the closer i looked the more it all seemed fake, like a movie set. the coffee & sandwich shop was literally named "cafe bistro." it was next to "paddy o'leary's irish pub." i got a shrimp basket at a place called, no shit, "shrimp basket," which was around the corner from "piazza pizza."

these aren't real places, these are fake names that give the audience the impression of a pizza place without having to clear copyright. or maybe it's all just carefully designed to help blind-drunk college republicans on spring break understand where they are. there was also a hooters and a señor frog's.

(to be fair, the shrimp basket was excellent. cafe bistro was closed, but above the door a foot-tall banner spanning the storefront made sure The Troops were Thanked regardless. i ate at "the reef" instead, the menu of which, in a magnificent display of creativity, turned out to have not one single item of seafood. the waitress called me y'all out of habit before catching herself.)

photo looking out over the ocean at sunset. the photo is looking south so you can't see the sun, but the sky is fading from pink near the horizon to grey higher up. all you can see is water and sky. it's all very muted. the sea is dark blue.

can anyone recommend an image editing app for mac? i don't need much more than the default photos app can do, but some basic drawing tools at least. i'd rather not use adobe. what's the mac equivalent of paint dot net?

BEHOLD. every year i grab as much citrus as i'm allowed from the fruit basket my aunt sends us and juice it all into what my brother has dubbed CHRISTMAS JUICE. it glows with concentrated christmas power, and let me tell you it is some real holy shit on new year's morning.
photo of a mason jar (well, ball jar) of mixed citrus juice. it's dark in the room but the juice appears to glow golden from within. there are strings of christmas lights out of focus in the background.

photo of breakers approaching the beach, looking out at the ocean around sunset. the ocean is green, the overcast sky is purple towards the horizon fading to pink up high. all the colors are muted pastels blending together. it's an east coast beach so the sun is behind us and it's getting dark towards the horizon.

photo looking east out at the atlantic from the beach just before sunrise. the ocean is dark with low waves coming in, but the sky is lighting up, and the wispy clouds overhead are faintly pink and purple, fading to orange lower in the sky. far off at the distant horizon huge clouds piled up look like mountains.

they dropped long rock jetties about every 1/4 mile to try to keep the beach in place. it's futile of course, but the rocks attract a ton of wildlife like these cockles. south carolina 2016
closeup photo of a cluster of cockles attached to big granite boulders on the beach. they're about half an inch wide. they're striped with black and gold in arcs, and deep ridges radiating from the hinge, and they shine iridecent where the sun hits them. it's out of the water but everything's wet from the crashing waves. green seaweed, barnacles, and a couple of tiny whelks can be seen nearby on the rocks as well.

no idea where the black sand comes from, or why it's laid down in a pattern. south carolina 2013
closeup photo of sand on the beach. it's taken at a flat angle so only a horizontal strip in the middle of the frame is in focus. the sand is mostly clear white but there are a good many black particles that have somehow by action of wind or waves been deposited in diagonal stripes across the beach. where the picture goes out of focus you can see the sand dissolve into a rainbow of lights.

this is my kind of beach: endless white sand, low waves and tide pools, no people. this isn't anything exotic and expensive, it's just south carolina. 2013
photo of the ocean from the beach. it's low tide, there are whitecaps and breakers to the horizon. a long tide pool stretches all the way across the frame. a few dead black trees stand at its edge, they were probably growing on high ground until a hurricane came through and reshaped the coast. the sand is dirty white, the sky is clear blue. there are no people to be seen.

and i got this one from @holboldoart.bsky.social‬! it's haunting, it's so silent and cold. this is what i love about winter. the quiet, the dark, the transformation. i expect i'll live to see the last of the snow, outside of the highest latitudes and altitudes.
photo of a painting of winter farmland. it's a view of small, snow-covered fields, bordered by snowy hedges, small trees and fences, stretching to the horizon. the sky is dark slate grey with heavy clouds at dusk. a road crosses from left to right, also covered with snow. cars have left some tire tracks. another road intersects with that one at a diagonal from the bottom left, and where they meet there's a utility pole with a payphone on it. the phone is hanging off the hook, and footprints in the snow lead up to it and away. the utility pole is just one in a line leading away into the distance ahead of us. in the far distance in that direction an impossibly tall radio mast towers over the landscape, lit with four red aviation obstruction lights. aside from the red lights, everything is dark and grey-blue and frozen.

i also got this incredible set from ‪@artofmaquenda.bsky.social! i think this is stunning, and it looks even better in print.
photo of two prints, one above the other. they appear to be watercolors, or maybe marker work. each is a picture of a fox, at the same time dead and decaying, and bursting with life, and the way they're lying they look almost like they're dancing. the fox in the top print looks mostly whole with orange fur intact, but you can see its ribs where its skin is gone, and springtime plant life is growing from the body in bright green and pink flowers. the fox in the bottom print is also mostly still covered with fur, but both its ribs and its skull are showing. it has fall foliage growing out all over. together the positions of the foxes in the two paintings sort of form a circle, spring-fall-death-life.

look at this badass anglerfish print i got from @phasemoth.bsky.social! in person it looks like it's about to thrash right out of the frame. i love the ocean more than anything, and i love the sort of heavy metal styling.
photo of a framed black & white print of an ink drawing of an anglerfish. the drawing is super energetic and violent, filling the whole frame. the fish's gaping mouth is huge and full of long sharp teeth. the drawing is very stylized, it looks kind of like a cross between a black seadevil and a dragon.

photo of a city at night. too close to be a skyline, tall buildings rise all around, lit in green, red, blue, gold. in the middle a steel pillar that looks like a ship's mast goes up at a slight angle, illuminated from below brilliant white. cables hanging from it support a wide platform that serves as a bridge over train tracks you can't see in this photo. dark, ghostly figures descend backlit stairs coming down from the platform to the dark ground in front.
