Baird's beaked whales varying in color and body size were suggested to be unique forms as early as the 1950s. After several decades and investigations into these deep diving, elusive whales, Sato's beaked whale was formally recognized as a separate species in 2019.

Across the dataset, we found evidence for long-term population decline, low genetic diversity, and an elevated burden of predicted deleterious alleles before extinction.

Mick Westbury @mick2474.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
We additionally analysed population-level data from Germany (~40 kya) and Ireland (~11 kya). The German and Irish individuals were genetically distinct, with the older German individuals showed higher genetic diversity.

We identified two genes under strong positive selection: • BNIPL, linked to apoptosis regulation • SLC10A7, linked to skeletal development and bone mineralisation These may relate to the giant body size and spectacular antlers of Megaloceros.
120
Mick Westbury @mick2474.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Our results showed that Megaloceros was sister to Dama (fallow deer), with a divergence around ~3.5 million years ago. We also found evidence for gene flow with ancestral Cervus lineages, adding another layer to the complex evolutionary history of deer.

The Hologenomics Section, Globe Institute, University at Copenhagen, is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to join our team. This position is part of the research project “Back from the Brink: experimental de-extinction in a model-organism to restore lost diversity”, funded under the Villum Experiment Programme. Overall: Early Formative communities in the Atacama managed camelids in domestication-like ways, but relied largely on wild or extinct lineages. Modern llamas & alpacas are not direct descendants of most animals herded here.

Mick Westbury @mick2474.bsky.social · 19/12/2025
Importantly, we find little evidence for early intergeneric hybridisation (Lama × Vicugna), which contrasts with the extensive admixture seen in modern camelids after the Spanish conquest.

Mick Westbury @mick2474.bsky.social · 19/12/2025
Genetic sexing shows roughly balanced male:female ratios across sites. This fits scenarios of mixed hunting and early herd management, or herding with selective male culling — not fully developed pastoralism yet.

Mick Westbury @mick2474.bsky.social · 19/12/2025
Although animals were managed in domestication-like ways, they appear to not be the direct ancestors of modern llamas or alpacas. This suggests early herding/domestication involved multiple evolutionary pathways.

We analysed nuclear genomic data from 75 ancient camelids from the Tulán ravine — a key region for the transition from hunting to early pastoralism in the South-Central Andes. Both genera, Lama and Vicugna, were present but most animals belonged to now-extinct or lost lineages.
