This fish was harvested as part of research on Lake Superior looking at lake trout. Analysis of its otolith ("ear stone") revealed that is was incredibly old. Find out more about "Mary Catherine," the oldest known lake trout: content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MID... #LakeSuperior #Fishing #Michigan

This is a rainbow darter, a species that likes clear, cool waters and is a great indicator of stream health. This one was caught during a Salmon in the Classroom salmon release. Students found this darter while they were doing a survey to see what lives in the stream/river. #IdentiFriday

Give turtles a brake! If you see one crossing the road, stop and help (if it's safe to do so). 🐢 Always assist a turtle in the direction it's moving. ⚠️ Never put hands near the bitey or scratchy bits. 🧤 And WASH YOUR HANDS after (or use gloves).

We love fawns, but we love seeing them in the wild more. Your friendly reminder that just because mom isn't around, doesn't mean she's not watching. Fawns are left alone for long periods of time and a doe will only return when they believe it's safe. Thank you for coming to our Fawn Talk.

The answer was....Butler's garter snake! They are about the width of your pinky. The eastern garter snake is about the width of a thumb. These snakes eat earthworms, frogs, fish and even leeches. A varied diet!

Weird wildlife fact time. Most birds have a terrible sense of smell. Because of this, great horned owls are able to prey upon skunks. Vultures are an exception to this.

Let's learn about Michigan's moose!
Graphic: Critter spotlight: moose
Image: Shows a moose standing in a field. Image of moose being lifted by a helicopter.
Graphic: The Michigan moose lift. Moose nearly disappeared from the UP by the 20th century due to changes in habitat and human exploitation. In the 1980s, 59 moose from Ontario were transported by helicopter and truck to northwest Marquette County with the goal of creating a self-sustaining free range moose population.

Friends don't destroy bird feeders, trash cans or eat your pet's food. If your friends are doing this, get new friends? Wildlife technicians get to do this type of work, but not all of them do. You roll the dice, but all wildlife work is worth it if you ask us. 😎

Let's learn about bears! (black bears in Michigan, to be specific)
Graphic: Critter spotlight: black bears

Image featuring a black bear standing in grass. Graphic: Black bears are the only bears in Michigan. There are about 12,000 black bears in Michigan. 10,000 are in the Upper Peninsula and 2,000 are in the northern Lower Peninsula. Though they are called "black bears," their fur colors come in black, brown, cinnamon, and blonde.
