Science peeps: Looks like SciENcv updated the digital certificate used to sign Biosketch and Current & Pending documents without notification. The old certificate expires Saturday, September 26, 2026. SciENcv docs before that date may fail validation in eRA Commons delaying or blocking submission.

Timely nudges promote patient portal enrollment and sustained engagement: a randomized controlled trial
AbstractObjective. Patient portals support health management, yet enrollment remains low. This study evaluated whether timely email nudges increase patient

Lesson two: the benefit of being a bit slow getting a paper out is that you can track sustainability of effects over many years!
110
Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
In an exploratory analysis, we found no difference in portal engagement over the ensuing four years between those who were nudged to enroll vs. those in the control condition who enrolled on their own, i.e., nudged enrollees became typical portal users.
100
Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
There was no difference between the two nudge emails, which contained action buttons that were either more (Get Started With [MyChart]) or less (View my Lab Results) transparent about the brief registration steps necessary to activate the portal before accessing results.
100
Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
Participants who received either email were about 3 times more likely to active their patient portal within one week. Lesson one: it's effective to encourage people to sign up for a service when doing so has an immediate pay off for them as opposed to when it's convenient for you.

🚨New paper from our Behavioral Insights Team🚨: we randomized patients without activated patient portals who had new lab results to receive one of two emails emphasizing a key portal feature—immediate access to results—or to no contact beyond usual system efforts to encourage enrollment.

npj Digital Public Health - eConsent vs traditional consent among prospective biobank participants: a randomized study within a study trial

Importantly, Sage Bionetworks' eConsent framework doesn't just digitize paper consent. It presents one concisely stated concept per screen, uses icons to visually reinforces concepts, allows info-seekers to “learn more,” & asks formative questions to reinforce learning.
110
Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Limitations include some imbalance in a few demographics between arms and the fact that this study compares only one application of the eConsent to one standard consent process.
110
Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Using scores on a 10-item comprehension quiz as our primary outcome, we found the eConsent was noninferior (and, in an exploratory analysis using a conservative alpha of p < 0.005, superior) to a traditional consent process for biobank enrollment.

Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
🚨New paper! eConsent can promote cost-effectiveness & equity in research, but how does it compare to traditional consent w/r/t informedness? In this RCT, we tested the Sage Bionetworks eConsent developed by @megdoerr.bsky.social & @wilbanks.bsky.social, used by, eg NIH All of Us & Apple ResearchKit.

Reviewer 2 used an LLM to generate their review of our manuscript—except for the part where they asked for several irrelevant papers, all mysteriously authored by the same person, to be cited. Thank you, Reviewer 1, whoever you are. Not all heroes wear capes.
I am unconvinced that the three additional citations, all to [redacted], add to the paper. Although I fully understand the authors’ decision to include them given the other reviewer’s suggestions, I would like to voice my firm support if they prefer not to include them in the final version.

I also disagree with IRB review of any survey instrument, since all surveys are exempt one way or another—unless the researchers are relying on exemption 2(ii), which depends on the researcher’s claim that survey responses are not sensitive (I’m happy with the IRB vetting that claim independently).

Michelle Meyer @michellemeyer.bsky.social · 11/03/2024
Of course incomplete disclosure is a nebulous concept since one can never disclose all details of a study. I hope the premise isn’t that randomization fits (2). But IMO disclosure isn’t compelled by (1) either, & the fact that it’s called out by some IRBs might indeed reflect an AB effect of sorts.

Oh dear. I disagree strongly, but this is not unheard of (& alas I don’t know of a resource arguing the negative). For instance, Penn’s IRB views this as incomplete disclosure (which is at least conceptually coherent, unlike deeming it deception) & requires debriefing irb.upenn.edu/homepage/soc...
