Personally, I find "show, don't tell" useless advice unless you're saying it about a specific detail and in that case, it's not going to help a writer improve unless you give reasoning. Sometimes you need to tell or your writing will become tedious. "Show, don't tell" doesn't help understand when.

Getting a nice variety of vibes for Anti-Prime Day: Snow Crash by @nealstephenson.bsky.social, A Latte Like Love by @michelle-c-harris.bsky.social, and a pre-order of Queen of Lombard Street by Lisa Kleypas. Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker is on backorder so I'm checking it out from the library.

book cover of A Latte Like Love by Michelle C. Harris. a latte in a mug sits on a table next to two hands barely touching and an an open sketchbook showing a sketch of a man and woman intimately touching foreheads.

book cover of Queen of Lombard Street by Lisa Kleypas. shows the inside of an ornate green building with a woman in front of a door.

Bryce starts out as a classic brooding Byronic hero, but becomes Mega's sidekick by the end. In the start they're both bitter at the world, but Bryce realizes his bitterness is petty and he wants to help Mega get the justice she deserves. She's too afraid of facing certain truths to pursue it alone.

We are now in a time where we can’t really afford to split hairs about tactics. Do what works. If you can back a city council into a corner over Maus, do it. If you have centrists with a libertarian streak, pushing a more generic “we cannot ban any book for fear of banning all books” tack works.
