Oh I shd add: Deisseroth’s work was (say it w me!) supported with public funding through federal science agencies incl NIH, NSF, and DARPA. And I daresay few political deciders in 2004 would have been excited to put algal proteins in HEK cells or neurons. Scientists knew, though.

We're thrilled to share that research co-led by SBU's Prof. Liliana M. Dávalos is on this month's cover of @nature.com! Her team's global study rewrites 65M years of bat evolution, solving long-standing mysteries about how, where & when they took flight. Here’s how they did it 🧵👇 (1/7)
Cover of Nature magazine dated October 1, 2026. The top header features the yellow "nature" logo. The main image shows a swarm of bats in mid-flight with translucent wings against a dark forest background. Bold white headline text reads "FAMILY SECRETS: Reference genomes redraw bat evolutionary tree".

happy "python release day" to all who celebrate. haven't noticed any significant speed-ups in 3.15 compared to 3.14 yet (unlike the dramatic ones I say from 3.13 to 3.14), but I'm still testing. #python
