Turns out fascists are scared of horror movies, both Franco and Mussolini banned them. Tonight I watched the first Italian horror film of the sound era. I Vampiri came out in 1957! But non fascist countries weren’t making many either. I guess vampires are quaint compared to what they’d gone through.

Say what you want about his politics, but at least Greg Stillson could hold up a kid. Vivek really is useless at everything.
Martin Sheen as Greg Stillson in the movie The Dead Zone holding up a toddler.

On a side note, not a week has gone by in 11 years that I don’t think of this movie.

One of the unquestionable benefits of the internet is it really cut down on these kinds of conversations.

Juliet is so effective, seems like there could have been more like it. I was impressed how many great shots it fit into 17 minutes. Funny you used “squeamish” too, it’s not gory but that one shot deserves some kind of heads up. Martin is a really good comparison, i should watch that again.

Italy comes back with a vengeance in the 60s and 70s, but almost nothing before that. There were tons of silent horror films in Europe so WWI didn’t stop them, but then it all slows to a halt for 20 odd years. I’m sure there’s a book out there that explains all of it.

To be fair, if one of those 6 movies is Diabolique, how many more do you need? Then they did Eyes Without A Face in 1960 and that was so good they took most of that decade off too. How do you say efficient in French? Efficace.

I think Postwar European horror will be my October movie project this year. I did just discover a silent short adaptation of M.R. James’s Oh Whistle And I’ll Come To You by the North Downs Cinematograph Society from 1956. The ghost is pretty effective.

Been looking this up and while I knew WWII affected horror cinema, I didn’t realize how outside a handful of films there essentially was no European horror cinema until Hammer in the late 50s and the 60s for France and Italy. Wikipedia lists 6 French horror movies for the entire 1950s. 6!

Sure £900 million in fraud sounds bad, but when you break it down across 9 seasons it’s only… hrrmmm, wait, no, that’s still insanely bad.

I’m not saying that Schmitt’s staff intentionally sabotaged him in his national spotlight moment, and that’s definitely not a rumor that should be started.

Zinedine Zidane's Intense Reaction
Alt: Zinedine Zidane's reaction to a great play when he was coaching Real Madrid. But it works here too. I try not to use reaction gifs often but Olise dribbling the field like that and finishing it with such a great strike is some proper 90s R9 football. Love when a fun can be described as marauding.

I get a ref isn’t going to want to card 9 players at once, so my compromise suggestion is card the captain if his team isn’t ready to play.

This is why I never board haunted ghost ships, avoids time slips. Incredible movie, Jenkins does it again. Looks and feels like a 70s BBC documentary and keeps you as unsteady as the two deckhands getting their sea legs. Really enjoyed this podcast discussion, now it’s already time for a rewatch.

Thinking of Connor Senn today. Feels impossible that he’s been gone for 25 years now. Felt impossible then too.
Connor playing soccer in his OSU jersey. He was a freshman walk on back in 2001. Then in a game he collapsed on the field and never recovered. Turns out he had a congenital heart defect, all those years, all those games, this was the one where it betrayed him. AEDs were hardly a thing then. Now many states require AEDs at all sporting events.
We played together on multiple club teams, then against each other in high school. Always liked him, and he was a hell of a good soccer player.

Juliet In Paris has a good looking print on YouTube. It’s worth your 17 minutes. (content warning if you’re squeamish) Truffaut did make The Bride Wore Black (1968) which was an homage to Hictchcock but I don’t think it’s particularly new wave or Hitchcockian, feels more like a giallo to me.

My brother and I were talking horror movies and he pointed out its odd given their fascination with crime and noir that the French New Wave directors didn’t make any horror. And he’s right, it’s pretty much a blank. But I did find Juliet Dans Paris (1967) a beautifully shot horror short…
Juliet, the main character wearing sunglasses and smiling as tears of blood streak down her cheeks. Honestly this might be the perfect reaction meme for 2026. If you ask me how I’m doing and I send you this, know things are pretty fucked up.

I don’t know if we’re going to make it, on a civilizational level if bakeries have to put this on their cake box. “We know you want to, but please don’t fling it at someone.” This was a $50 cake! Not some Wal-Mart slop.
Side of a cake box that pleads “Do not throw cake and or the pad at anyone as serious accidents may occur.”

It’s too bad Jack Torrance is such a bad guy cause that corduroy jacket is sweet as hell, but he’s ruined it for casual wear. At least the burgundy but maybe it would be ok in navy or a nice hunter green?

Billionaire brain damage. We don’t have to take a guy seriously if he brags about not knowing his address. Lately when time allows, I won’t turn on car navigation. I’ve noticed my ability to remember directions has atrophied and I don’t like it. I’ve missed a couple turns but it’s good practice.

Finally the right decision has been made. I’d love a more specific criticism of Pipa’s behavior and a more forceful statement on women having a place in the game from the team that just won NWSL rights, but I’ll settle for this.

Having slept on it, I think I like Miracle Mile even more. What a strange movie, no wonder it bombed in theaters. But I like the little heightened reality touches, the rats in the palm tree, the coyote inside the diner, very LA. Great soundtrack by Tangerine Dream too.
A coyote inside a diner eating scraps while an elderly woman sits at the counter unaffected.
