It would help if Pope Leo had written more clearly so as to ensure people understand that the 1st sentence is only effective insofar as the 2nd sentence is (i.e., where "effective systems of detention" are NOT present such that "the common good can be safeguarded", the death penalty IS admissible).

Make sure you know what the contest expects from your story because it hurts to realize that, even if you've crafted a story you're proud of, it's not going to win because you didn't take the time to learn up front what the judges would be looking for.

In some contests you'll be given a word, and all you have to do is use the word in your story, no matter how incidentally. In other contests you'll be given an object, and that object has to matter to your story rather than be incidental.

Modern popes have long been hypocrites on the death penalty, as the Catholic Church has a long history of handing over heretics to the state to be executed. The Church can't absolve itself of those deaths any more than the Jews could excuse themselves for handing Jesus to the Romans for execution.

That's why I think it's important for people to clarify what kind of [adjective] they're talking about -- i.e., "When you say, 'I'm English,' do you mean nationally (if that even applies), ethnically (which may give your statement an objective true/false value), culturally (wiggly to define), etc?"

On the other hand, she and anyone else in her family who are British citizens are British now -- by nationality. And maybe her family is culturally something else entirely -- hypothetically they could've all grown up in Mexico and practiced Mexican culture and are still practicing in it Britain.

I would argue this would take someone English from outside her Asian family marrying into her family for any English ethnicity to appear in her family's descendants. That's just how ethnicity works. What should be emphasized, though, is that ethnicity ultimately shouldn't matter one whit to anyone.

Where this could get confusing is if "English" refers not only to ethnicity but also to a subordinate level of citizenship comparable to "British". For example, in addition to being an American, as a citizen of the state of Texas I am also a Texan. Does "English" have its own level of citizenship?

This is not hard: She sees "British" as her nationality and "Asian" as her ethnicity. She is not ethnically English. Similarly, I myself was born in America. So were my parents & grandparents. But we're not "Native American" ethnically. We're ethnically Polish, and we're American by nationality.

Exodus 20:13 -- Thou shalt not kill. Exodus 21:12 -- He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. Same God said both. Not a contradiction because the Hebrew words for "kill" (basically "murder") and "put to death" (basically "execute") are different. Just FYI.
