I don’t really know who this is, but anyone claiming to sell you Wisdom is probably scamming you. Ever since Socrates, the wise do not claim to be (and do not know that they are) wise. There’s my wisdom for you, free of charge. For now.

It is pretty amazing how much time people will spend to keep driving and how little to consider other ways of getting around.

Yes! I’ve seen people demonstrate that they assume exactly that . when it’s put to them so explicitly they back track, but they argue in ways that demonstrate that they have equated driving with taxpaying and biking with freeloading.

Autopopulism benefits certain economic actors (and harms others) but its appeal to voters (and hence to governments) is primarily about identity and culture. I think that’s basically right.

I'm not sure either. It is a possibility, though. But that party's policy over the past few years have reduced that possibility by a lot. I actually don't like being partisan on here (or anti-partisan). But i'm coming around to just saying it like it is.

I'm not a "parties and democracy" scholar. But this is my guiding assumption about parties and democracy (at least in FPTP systems).

Kind of like in the US except that there it's not independence but authoritarianism that is the governing ideology of the party.

My worry is that it leads to a single pro-independence right wing populist party (rather that a single right wing populist party that is wishy-washy about independence) and thus to a situation where the only way sanity can prevail is if the other party just always wins.

... gives us a crack at having a party in government that can speak with a unified voice and pursue a coherent policy on Alberta's place in Canada. That would be ok. (Not saying which party I think that should be). But recent experience makes me expect the worse. Sorry to be a bummer.

This is going to be so bad. Unless it isn't. But it probably will be. When they're pulling a Trump and sowing the seeds of conspiracy in anticipation of a loss and plotting other ways of leveraging that conspiracism to seize power... it's not good. Now... maybe this splits the right in AB and...

... you've got a basic inequality between governments that is NOT replicated between the Federal Government and the provinces (at least not at anything like that scale). Someone is welcome to prove the contrary to me, of course.

Now municipalities, on the other hand, have lots of right to complain about provincial governments. Where provinces have the power to (and almost always to) curtail muncipalities' ability to raise funds, and also the power to unilaterally download costs onto municipalities without real redress..

I guess I knew this at some level already. But, man, it gives some unflattering context for some of our #abpoli referendum questions (and general complaints by premiers in other provinces as well). That's not saying this is good or bad, just that these facts aren't well-represented in our rhetoric.

Notley is still respected in her own party (I believe). But does she have a significant constituency beyond that? Kenney retains even less of that... unless there's something I don't know: is there a bloc of anti-populist conservatives that still look to him for leadership?

Michael DeMoor @michaeldemoor.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
But in Canada or the UK, very very few people leave office (or even the leadership of their party) "on top". How many of them have been able to shake off the stink of failure, then, and retain a personal constituency?
110 1
Michael DeMoor @michaeldemoor.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Former US presidents -- at least those who served 2 terms -- can sometimes be said to have gone out "on top" in a way former premiers basically can never claim. So someone like, say Barack Obama or Bill Clinton, can still trade on their reputation as winners when they stump for candidates or causes.

Michael DeMoor @michaeldemoor.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Has anyone ever studied the political effectiveness of statements/campaigns by former leaders in parliamentary systems? Since we don't have term limits, all political careers end in failure. In other words, FORMER, politicians are - almost by definition - losers.
