Texas is looking pretty grim these days.
U.S. COVID-19 heat map dated August 24, 2026, based on CDC wastewater data last updated August 15. County-level estimates range from very low (pale blue-green) to very high (purple). Very high levels are concentrated across Texas and parts of the Gulf Coast and Southwest, with generally lower levels across much of the Midwest and Northeast. Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories appear in inset maps.

Just in case he knows something I don't about my life in Chicago, I stepped outside to check. He's right. As you can see, the trees are gross, and everything stinks. And I really hate that they've torn up the street to prep for resurfacing it, which is such a commie move. Why do I even live here?

I turned 12 that year, and it was EVERYWHERE. It was an especially big deal at school, with special coins we wanted to collect, etc. And everyone was united (no pun intended) in celebrating something that really did feel bigger than us. Even the superheroes got in on it (this is from my collection).

No furry friends, alas, but this is Zachary, our peace lily—so named because whenever he's thirsty, he wilts dramatically, as if to silently scream: "The pain! The pain!"

Our fathers lit this fire in us. This is my dad, my brother, and me in front of Apollo 11, a couple of weeks before liftoff. (Dad was there working on Biosatellite 3.) We choose to go to the moon. Indeed. It still makes me tear up. And we all need to rediscover that collective lump in our throats.

Also, if emotional trauma counts, this messed me up but good. I didn't quite understand what, exactly, had happened. But I knew getting over your head in adult doings meant big feelings and, potentially, nobody to help you out with them.

When our peace lily feels a bit parched, it goes full drama queen and droops flat, like it's never been so dry and has no hope of feeling the touch of water ever again. Give it a little, and it perks right back up again. So tonight, my wife and I named it Zachary. "The pain! The pain!"

Click Settings & privacy, then click Content Preferences.

Click Political content.

Select your preferred political content control setting.
