When Wab asks if MB should switch to summer time or standard time, don't be a coward. Look at how Winnipeg straddles time zones. We're a half-hour off of Mountain Time. We're a half-hour off of Central Time. Demand the half-hour compromise. Let's follow Newfoundland's lead. #UTC-6:30
A map of Canada and the United States depicting strictly mathematical time zones based on 15-degree longitude increments, completely ignoring provincial/state/political boundaries. Straight, grey vertical lines slice north to south to mark these boundaries, diving the map into vertical colour-coded strips.

The province of Manitoba has two colours: its western half is orange, matching its western neighbour Saskatchewan in Mountain Standard Time, UTC–7), and its eastern half is yellow, matching most of its eastern neighbour Ontario in Central Standard Time, UTC–6. The city of Winnipeg sits right near the vertical gray dividing line that splits the province down the middle, visually demonstrating that it straddles the boundary between the two mathematical time zones.

I forgot how much respect drivers give you when you are carrying a baseball bat home. Every driver gave me a full full lane change when overtaking. I wish I had a helmet cam to show you
Photo taken while on the cargo bike, stopped at a red light. In my left hand is the pink baseball bat. The asphalt road has faded bicycle lane paint. The trees along the side of the road are still bare, the sky above is blue and clear.

You stop to replace your broken glass dishes, you end up buying your kid a baseball bat. I don’t get it either.

Finally warm enough in Winnipeg to take the pogies off the cargo bike. Great way to keep the wine bottles from clinking in the panniers.
Top down photo into a rectangular hard-shell bicycle pannier. Inside the pannier, there are four wine bottles. Two of the four are tucked inside neoprene handlebar mitts, or “pogies”.

I made a shirt for the @bikewinnipeg.bsky.social AGM. One of our city councillors called us the “Big Bike Lobby”, when 100+ people took the day off of work to share their harrowing stories with a dangerous street. And it stuck with me. I do in fact pilot a big bike.
Close-up photo of red t-shirt. The graphic on the shirt is a silhouette of a long-tail cargo bicycle, with passenger setup on the back, and the text “Big Bike Lobby”Photo of my toddler on the back of my big orange long tail bicycle in the winter. There is snow on the ground. The bicycle is parked beside a circle bike rack beside a snow covered road. The toddler is in an orange toddler seat on the back of the bicycle. They are wearing a purple polka dot parka, a snowboard helmet, a balaclava, and sunglasses. The bicycle has bar mitts, a big front rack and bag, and two waterproof paniers on the sides.

Unrelated, here’s a post-blizzard photo of my winter lawn decorations
Two decorative light-up goose lawn ornaments wearing red plaid scarves stand nearly buried in deep snow during a blizzard, with only their heads and upper necks visible above the snow line. Behind them, a row of bare brown bushes or shrubs are also heavily snow-covered. Large snowflakes are actively falling, creating a white-out effect against the overcast sky. The geese appear to be comically overwhelmed by the snowfall.

It finally snowed in Winnipeg. Just like last winter, Little A insisted on the bicycle instead of the car. So, I put chains on the cargo bike tires and we headed to my fav diner. #wpgbike #cargobike

The day after the City of Winnipeg proposed paint and plastic post bike lanes on Wellington Crescent, a driver crashed into Rob Jenner’s ghost bike. Poetic? Scary? Infuriating?
Photo of the cracked plaque at the ghost bike. The top half of the plaque reads “Rob Jenner. June 5, 1963—June 6, 2024”. On the ground below it, the bottom half reads, “Gone but not forgotten”. The ghost bike is painted white, as is tradition. It is chained to a lamp post, surrounded by crunchy fallen leaves. A top-down photo of the ghost bike showing that the frame is now bent and cracked.

Little Miss A is stuffing her face with cheese and crackers before we bike down to the river for a toboggan walk. Drivers gave me even more passing room the way that I strapped the toboggan to the cargo bike. 😛
Photo of the inside of a garage. In front is a toddler wearing winter clothes, holding a plate of cheese and crackers. There is a smiling emoji covering the toddler’s face. Behind the toddler is an orange long-tail electric cargo bike, complete with a large basket up front, a toddler seat on the back, and a long orange toboggan strapped behind that.Photo outside on a snow-covered frozen river. In the foreground is the same toddler sitting on the orange toboggan. The sun has set and the sky is overcast. On one side of the frozen riverbank are tall mature bare trees. On the other side are tall condo buildings. The toddler and toboggan are beside a cleared skating trail on the frozen river.

I lived in Vancouver for 8 years. Pretty quickly, I realized I needed to be comfortable getting wet in the rain, because it was going to rain regardless. I didn’t need to feel miserable for months. It’s like that in Winnipeg. You can embrace the cold or shy away from it.
A selfie taken alongside the cleared river trail. I’m standing in the snow alongside the Christmas trees. I’m wearing a red and white tuque with a pompom, ski goggles, a black fleece balaclava, and a red and grey winter coat.

Yes! I didn’t wanna buy a second set of these and figure out how to stud them. So, I had SlipNot make a pair for me. Give them your dimensions, wait a few weeks, then install in 5 minutes. www.slipnottraction.com

Even in the spots with the fresh snow, the tire chains on the cargo bike made this a delightful ride to daycare. A few minutes of exercise in the fresh air and the rising (cloudy) sun is just a perfect way to start the day

I love many things about having married into a Haitian family, but their Haitian Independence Day feast is high in that list. The world’s first independent Black republic achieved through a slave revolt. 🇭🇹 L’union fait la force indeed. Happy New Year to you all. We’re stronger together.

My brain hurt trying figure out where all these beers were from. I love a Leffe Blonde, but I know it’s not from… Vancouver.
A photo of a menu at a bar. The top half has a list of beers and their countries of origin. The bottom half is a map of North America, Greenland, Europe and Africa. Scattered seemingly randomly across the lands and oceans are dots that are labelled with beer names. On closer inspection, there is a 2-axis graph overlaid on the map with “hoppy to sweet” and “fruity to malty” axis labels, to which the dots actually correspond.

Last Friday, I was one of 28 people who spoke at City Hall in favour of taking a long-loved "bike route" in Winnipeg and adding protected cycling infrastructure and dropping the speed limit to 30 km/h. Tomorrow, we'll speak at the Executive Policy Committee. And be "we" I mean 53 OF US!
Screenshot of CBC News Winnipeg from the 6p.m. news. The chyron reads "Push to lower speed limit on Wellington Crescent heard at city hall". The screenshot of the video displays a committee room filled with people wearing red shirts. Red was Rob Jenner's favourite colour. In the middle of the group of people is Wendy Jenner, the widow of Rob. A driver killed Rob on Wellington Crescent on June 6th, 2024, while travelling at a speed in excess of 159 km/h.

The tire chains that I’m referencing. These tires are 22x3, and I don’t want to try to stud another set, so I bought a set of SlipNot custom-made chains. You tell them your tire dimensions and wait a few weeks. They’re just a 5-minute install job.

The tire chains on the RadWagon 4 were perfect for daycare dropoff. They are loud and 5-8 km/h slower, but the ice at intersections basically didn’t exist. Plus the toddler loved being outside on the #CargoBike. I might actually be #WinterCycling this year.

I put the SlipNot tire chains on my e-cargo bike! Super easy, 5 minutes. The test ride to and from daycare was very promising. They are loud. They are 5-8 km/h slower. But they are sturdy. I couldn’t slip when I tried. Looks like i might try #WinterCycling this year. #CargoBike
