They also work very well with the lower and easily calculable damage numbers used in classic Paper Mario games. Other RPGs typically are a lot more complex in that regard, and Danger/Peril really highlight how much having those lower numbers can add to the strategy of the game.

Not sure if this is a hot take, but I think "Danger" and "Peril" in classic Paper Mario are actually pretty well-designed risk vs. reward mechanics. Sure, they're crazy strong, but using them to their fullest typically requires a lot of knowledge and careful planning.

Even if it's not a "Mario" game, it's still clearly a spiritual successor to Super Mario Odyssey. It's a 3D platformer with pretty much the exact same open collectathon style of gameplay that Odyssey had. It's actually a prequel to Odyssey as well, as those who've played through it would know.

I was thinking about it, and Bananza reminds me of the final sequence in Super Mario Odyssey where you capture Bowser and break through a bunch of stuff. Bananza is kind of like a more fleshed out version of that. I wonder if there was some inspiration drawn there.

It's pretty crazy to me how the people clamoring for a 3D Mario think 5 years is a long time between games. Some game series can end up going a decade or even longer without anything. Heck, 2D Mario is an example of exactly that. New Soup U and Super Mario Bros Wonder were nearly 11 years apart.
