"Software developers are not okay" www.baldurbjarnason.com/2026/05-soft... The software industry is becoming increasingly hostile to those who work in it. The uncertainty is affecting even those who believe in the promises of tech. Direct link to the essay: www.baldurbjarnason.com/2026/05-soft...

I have to stop myself from looking whenever I go in a shop that sells it because I could totally drop my whole monthly salary on just Lego

back on waitress, which I’m not going to post much about other than to defend the Cricket. Cricket is not boring, I’ll have you know! I rather enjoy throwing a game on another monitor whilst I work. (if you’re finding cricket boring you need to watch the hundred or T20 instead of a test or ODI)

the worst thing in programming is going “oh hey I can reuse this other function to build this new thing” and then the new thing turns out to work slightly differently and need slightly different output and welp suddenly there’s _even more_ hand written SQL in this project

There is no intrinsic link in atproto between the PDS and the AppView, operators run as much as they want / need to run, and it's safe to say most people are not thrilled by the thought of hosting over 16TB of data for an AppView, but PDSes are orders of magnitude lighter, even for busy ones

Mia @mia.omg.lol · 02/10/2026

This is not an option to change PDS, and of all the PDS hosts (excl. Bluesky), only two run AppViews* (Blacksky and Eurosky). I only see their view if I use their app or set my app to, regardless of my current PDS. *this is because they are very expensive, relative to the PDS which can run on a RPi

truth be told i came up with the alt text and worked backwards

yeah they're very strange - they switch which $type they use sometimes, i've seen app.bsky.feed.via too which also doesn't exist. I think it's actually invalid CBOR data over the firehose too but I haven't dug into it

"Mia, wtf" i hear you ask. shower thought. too good to pass up, even though it took like 15 minutes to get the camera settings and timing right and the screen was not bright enough and the room was not dark enough.

as September turns into October, we must, of course, remember to salute the anthem

a girl (me!) sits at her desk lit only by her computer monitor, with her hand on her heart, looking at her computer, which is playing Maisie Peters' There It Goes. The line "I wake up and it's October" is currently playing

and you thought this was a Green Day joke, didn't you?

i get that there's people that bluesky might not want to host (whether i agree with the decisions or not) but as it stands you can't migrate out or download your repo when suspended either, so if you get permabanned for something on bluesky, you lose everything, which i don't think is great UX?

Mia @mia.omg.lol · 01/10/2026

relatedly, and i don't know if this is a you or a dev question, but there was a thing a while back about doing most takedowns through mod.bsky rather than directly on the PDS (which cuts off their access to other atp services) - the latter still seems to be happening, was there a change of plan?

calling them communities would be flat out wrong, this is a setting to choose a backend API server (hence: "content service") where they all host identical datasets

Mia @mia.omg.lol · 01/10/2026

good news, there's also places like Eurosky, Northsky, Blacksky, and many more, with easy to use migration tools that let you move your Bluesky account to a different provider without losing any data

surely if you're having to leave notes about how the thing you're trying to do is unsupported then *maybe*, as the org that defines the spec, you should look at fixing it??
