There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Statement: No Climbing Costs for CEO Pay
Photo of Representative Kat McGhee and text. Rep. McGhee is wearing a dark shirt and a silver necklace. She is smiling at the camera and has shoulder length brown hair. Quote from Rep. McGhee reads: “My bill stops CEO bonuses from becoming part of your bill. If a utility company wants to reward its executives when profits go up, shareholders can take that money from their profits, not your pocketbook.”Statement reads: "No climbing costs for CEO profits. September 17th, 2026 – Representative Kat McGhee has filed LSR 2027-0167, relative to public utility rate treatment of executive compensation.

Rep. Kat McGhee (D-Hollis), the bill’s prime sponsor, released the following statement:

“Granite Staters are paying more for energy every month, and the last thing we need to do is let utility companies give executive bonuses as part of their recoverable charges. As energy costs keep climbing to include replacing expensive transmission lines, more frequent and severe storm costs, and a war-premium for depleted fuel supply, the least we can do is take measures to prevent shareholders from using ratepayer money to reward utility executives for achieving shareholder goals.

My bill stops CEO bonuses from becoming part of your bill. If a utility company wants to reward its executives when profits go up, shareholders can take that money from their profits, not your pocketbook.

Press Release: Education Aid Cut $25 Million Statewide #NHPolitics
Press release text reads: "EDUCATION AID CUT $25 MILLION STATEWIDE. State aid to most New Hampshire communities will be reduced in FY27. September 14, 2026 – At the beginning of September, the NH Department of Education released state aid figures for all 245 New Hampshire municipalities for Fiscal Year 2027. The figures show that state education aid will be reduced $25 million statewide in FY27, with 141 of 245 municipalities receiving less aid than they did last year. House Democratic Leader Alexis Simpson (D-Exeter) released the following statement:

“New Hampshire ranks dead last in state support for public schools, and this year funding is being cut another $25 million statewide. Our communities are already struggling to make ends meet, and most will receive less aid than they did last year.

Cities with the biggest challenges, like Nashua and Manchester, are losing millions in state support. The town of Belmont is losing $1.2 million, over 20% of its state aid.

With fixed costs like heating, transportation and health insurance continuing to rise, our public schools cannot afford cuts in state support. It is simply impossible to provide a constitutionally adequate education without sufficient funding.”"
