Troopers say drivers in El Paso County got the most speeding tickers last year with 2,161. Nearly 40 years later, justice is brought to a community with Douglas County’s solving of a cold case
For 39 years, Tamara Harney never gave up hope that her father’s murderer would one day sit behind bars. A piece of her has been missing for 39 years, she said. “My life has never been the same,” Harney told Douglas County District Court Judge Victoria Klingensmith. “It will never be the same.” On Jan. 16, Klingensmith sentenced 67-year-old Michael Shannel Jefferson to 32 years in the Department of Corrections for conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree.

A large crowd gathered at the justice center in Douglas County for a ceremony to mark the creation of Colorado’s first new judicial district in roughly 60 years, a move that breaks Arapahoe County off into its own district and leaves Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties with their own court system. “This moment is a testament to the growth and evolution of our community, a recognition that the needs of our citizens are ever-changing and that our judicial system must evolve alongside them,” Chief Judge Ryan Stuart, of the new 23rd Judicial District, said in a news release.
