Who is Mabon? And why is His name associated with one of the celebrations of the NeoPagan Wheel of the Year? In my latest video essay I explore this very question! And also discuss whether or not it’s appropriate to rip something out of its cultural context to do with as we please.

Put me on the cover of “Good Food” magazine stat 😂 I made jam for the first time, and did rather well in my own little humble opinion! Jam made from the damsons growing in the garden 😁 living my best “witch living in a small cottage in a rural part of Wales” life. Hehehe.

There are many words in Welsh for butterfly. But my absolute favourite has to be: Glöyn Byw / Glöyn Fyw Literally translating to mean “living coal” or “living embers of lit coal”. It’s just so fitting and evocative. Fun to imagine butterflies as little fire sprites.

When someone demands that you dim your light because it makes them uncomfortable, remind them that it is, in actuality, their responsibility to buy a pair of sunglasses if your light is too bright for them to deal with. It is not your responsibility to diminish yourself for them.

Developers want to take this land and turn it into a holiday park. Removing the majority of the woodland, getting rid of lakes, disturbing the flora and fauna. The photo on the right is the current proposed plan for the area. Horrific.

Branwen was a foreigner in a foreign land who was used as a scapegoat and mistreated terribly. The entire tale ripples with narratives concerning the othering of people we might perceive as “different”, and the devastation that can come when these beliefs divide us.

People messaged me to let me know that my story, and my words touched and moved them on a visceral level. That the experiences shared help give words to experiences they have also had. And that’s what I’m choosing to focus on. Not the nastiness. The joy, the love, the magic of it all 🥰💖

Ooh gosh that’s always a tough one! I personally work with both with no issues (usually for different reasons!) But my personal recommendation would be: If you already have a good relationship with Arawn, perhaps ask Him how He would feel about it! Ask for a sign or indication of how He’d feel.

In Welsh lore all pigs originate from the Otherworld. Cattle and cows are deeply associated with fairies. Many denizens of the Otherworld travel with their hunting hounds. Animals often act as guides to the “other”.

Mhara Starling @mharastarling.bsky.social · 15/10/2025
When people envision “the fae” they almost always imagine a humanoid being. From elegant elven riders, to goblin-like household fairies. But terms like “fairy” are a broad term for all otherworldly entities. And that includes otherworldly animals. Fairy cows, dogs, horses, and pigs are a thing!
