Question of the day: Am I more upset that my dentist is sick because it means that my wisdom tooth remains a Problem for a while longer, or that it completely changes the expected trajectory of the next few weeks?

(Disclaimer, I didn't read the article) I also mean internationally! Everywhere makes it so hard to actually get these diagnoses, or then treat you like a criminal or entitled for wanting supports or treatment, to then turn around and say that it's overdiagnosed? It really irritates me!

Dr Maggie Glass @mglass.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Right? You'd wonder if any of these people have actually tried to seek out one of these diagnoses for themselves or their loved ones

It's interesting, because another other side of this is 'well why would you want an official diagnosis? It's not like there are any medications you can use to treat it!' You can't win!

We thank everyone whose valuable input informed out approach, and we hope that the paper will spark further action to ensure that our communities, traditions and global intangible heritage are protected and supported from official to grassroots levels.

We highlight the obstacles which cause human-machine communication to break down, both at a policy and a user level. These are not simply technical concerns. They are ethical questions of rights, representation, inclusion and the long-term sustainability of linguistic and cultural diversity

We argue that AI is not language-neutral. Speakers of regional and minority languages encounter friction at every stage of interaction with HME-technology. We address real concerns regarding the provenance and use of system training data, to the way they are developed, and the outputs they produce.

This paper, drawn from conversations we had through our work with @lghumanmachine.bsky.social, asks the question as AI becomes part of everyday life, what happens to the languages and communities that are already underrepresented in the digital world? What (if any) structural supports are in place?

I am very pleased to finally share the briefing paper @dringebirnie.bsky.social, @melodyannross.bsky.social and I developed, entitled Reducing Friction: Addressing Inequalities Faced by Regional and Minority Languages of Europe in the Human-Machine Era: doi.org/10.6084/m9.f...
doi.org
ADDRESSING INEQUALITIES FACED BY REGIONAL AND MINORITY LANGUAGES OF EUROPE IN THE HUMAN-MACHINE ERA
Rapid technological advances have signalled a shift towards the human-machine era. The human-machine era, characterised by its focus on communication through and with technology (Sayers et al., 2021), will continue to change the way in which language is used, and individuals use language to communicate and interact. These advances in technology have been recognised as creating opportunities to improve human rights, including creating and enhancing access to information, health education, and public services (United Nations 2023). However, the potential that technological advances and developments can bring to support improvements in human rights needs to be set against the (ongoing) challenges of maintaining linguistic and cultural diversity.Around 75% of the world’s languages are considered to be in danger of disappearing in the next century (UNESCO 2011). Currently the developments in technology are resulting in an increased linguistic homogeneity (The Centre for Internet and Society et al. 2022). Speakers of RMLs inherently have fewer resources and tools available to them in this domain, increasing the already existing digital divide. This inequality puts languages at risk of being ‘irrelevant and stigmatised’ (UNESCO Ad Hoc Expert Group on Endangered languages 2003: 11). Therefore, language diversityand vitality, as well as the associated community identity and intangible cultural heritage, is linked to inclusion of these languages within technological advancements. This means resolute action is required to ensure that, in line with the United Nations Universal Declaration for Human Rights, everyone can ‘participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts, and to share in the scientific advancement and its benefits’ (United Nations 1948: Article 22, emphasis by the authors), with ‘technology [serving] as a force for good’ (United Nations 2023). The current and future impact of the advances in technology has been recognised at supranational level with the establishment of advisory bodies and committees to provide recommendations and prepare legislative frameworks which acknowledge the benefits and risks that these advances bring to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. These actions have focused on minimising risks and providing regulatory measures for artificial intelligence within the human rights framework but have not directly considered, addressed, or referred to the accessibility and availability of these tools and applications in and for different minority or regional language users. This is the focus of this briefing paper.

The reason some Jews are so skeptical of criticism of Israel, (and this is explanation and not defense), is that you start with "the Israeli government is racist" and end with what the Green Party actually adopted, which is, "Individual UK Jews can be punished for attending shuls we deem Zionist."

Common across the UK is still regional! I currently don't have the time to look into it further, but if you are interested, that is known as the FLEECE vowel in linguistics literature. Language variation is very well documented in that part of the world, so it should be out there!
