Everything from how the scenes were shot to every set piece used is the perfect encapsulation of the early to mid 2000s which you need to nail down when talking about Chris Hansen. Being able to juggle the predatory aspects from both the subjects and those running the show itself was phenomenal work

constantly presented as the only nation of note in the world, and how an absentee parent is depicted as a noble person instead of the deadbeat that he is. This is genuinely one of the worst sequels to an iconic series for whole medium I've experienced in a long while

Each character is somehow drawn more poorly than the last, and they're attached to a story with a bloated cast that has little to no charm in any of their dialogue or personal journey. Even just thematically and vibe wise, there's this constant ick with how poorly women are treated, how Japan is-

Any charm or excitement that was in the original Initial D is completely non existent here. The fun races with exciting battles are replaced with photographed scenic shots where commentators are giving the most dull play by play analsysis with very little being depicted on the pages.

Especially because you can treat this movie as an alternate world where Sakiko has passed way since they present her as a ghost

Genuinely such a baffling way to handle the whole thing. "Dealing with harassment or strong criticism? Air out on your most private thoughts to a wide audience and surely everyone will come to understand everything" I feel bad because I sound cynical, but that's just not realistic or healthy

The characters (for the most part) are likable, but they are victim to a setting that is ready to dispose of their story when issues become too real and big for the story to handle. There's a lot of charm to this show so I feel bad being so harsh to it, but to see it waste a lot of potential is sad

The result is this Frankenstein monster where tonal whiplash tends to be a severe issue and the series dropping the ball completely when it comes to dealing with trauma caused by issues specific to the digital space.

A two season show trapped in a one season show that struggled to find an identity due to trying to match the high energy and sillyness of early Bang Dream with a fundamental misunderstanding of the more dramatic storytelling of the newer entries and what made them so compelling.
